street miata stolen, suggestions for replacement

    If you read it carefully along with other articles. What they meant was early 05 have issues but late 05 and 06 have very little issue as they went to double row. LMS makes a kit for up to early 05.

    I disagree.. 06+ 997 non-S is already sub $30k, and have been for few years now. better IMS bearing was installed in late 05, so 06+ is fine.
    it aint no Toyota reliable. but it is a LOT more reliable than BMW, VW, Mini, Mercedes...all those issues you mentioned, fuel pump, worn bushing and leaky radiator, that's a BMW thing for last 20 years.
    as for over-rev. that's a thing of ALL manuals, not just Porsche. just because you can check it on Porsche, doesn't make it any less reliable.

    997 is basically a 996.2. 996 have been reliable other than the IMS issue. 06+ 997 IMS issue is insignificant, and 997 is more reliable than a 996

    If he liked the Miata but wasn't one to put the top down, I'd say GT86/BRZ. They'd seem to be a good analog in that they are sporty, get good mileage, not hard to drive around town, and not badly priced. Go in, negotiate a 7 year extended warranty with the deal, and he literally doesn't have to turn a wrench on it until 2026 at the earliest.

    997 parts price on par with z3, and about 1/2 the price of a M3.

    for RWD - 997.1 or 997.2. small, nimble, easy to park, at bottom of depreciation curve for few years now (997.1). low-mid 30s buys you a no story 60-75k miles 06+ 997.1 Carrera S.
    This is the only "high end" sport car that sits upright. narrow door (helps in parking spot, you young people don't understand), that an elderly gentleman would appreciate.
    997 is also one of most reliable cars I've owned. IMS issue is insignificant in 06+.

    FWD - choices like Mini Cooper S or GTI are nice. again they sit upright, that your dad would love. But they are wrong wheel drive, and they are nowhere as reliable as a 997.

    Yep, he's doing well. I think my s2000 is tougher to get in an out of due to how far inboard the seat is. Like a less extreme version of lotus square tube you gotta climb over to get in. The corvette has longish doors and is maybe lower? Miatas with their seats so close to the door and door geometry seem a lot easier to me. Also lots of room left since they are fairly narrow when you park them.

    Dad must be in good shape if "jump in" and "jump out" is applicable to a Miata for him! That's great! I vote GTI.
