        I've heard stories of an old school long time So Cal racer that would spray brake cleaner in his arm pits to cool down at the track.

          Brakleen main ingredient is acetone. (with methanol,naptha, and more)
          In the chem lab we always used acetone in the fume hood.
          Better than the old carcinogenic tetrachloroethalene cleaners.

              I recall a story of someone who heated up a part that was doused in brake clean, got some of the fumes and now has permanent disabilities as a result.

                That is true. You don't want use brake clean to clean anything you're going to weld for instance. It can lead to all kinds of respiratory problems. Heating brake cleaner can lead to hydrogen chloride or phosgene. If you breathe it it can lead to chronic bronchitis or emphysema.
