I set a new Infineon record this month. I went to the Friday test day, did five laps during which the engine cut out 10-20 times. On the final lap I spun a rod bearing then got stuck in turn 3B for a while, bump-started it in reverse rolling backwards down the hill then towed it home, forfeiting the weekend entry fee.

Man, driving Infineon with upgraded eyes is way awesome! Ran a 1:40.2 in my second lap yesterday morning in the new car (2011 Cup w/ IMSA Yokohama slicks)... JvO ran a 1:39.3 after lunch in it. My last lap of the day was a 1:40.7.

Beautiful day as well.. sunny, breezy and high of 75 degrees. Winter testing in California FTW! :-)

I got my first pair of prescription glasses last year, but never wore them cause they gave me headaches and it ****ed up my depth perception. Now both are 20/15 and it's pretty awesome, but I don't think I'm any faster. Safer and more comfortable maybe... but not faster as far as I can tell. Was hoping it'd fix my issue with rolling entry speed.

Hmm.... not sure on a slick versus r6 at Infineon. Since it's so technical, I'd imagine it's worth at least 2-3 seconds assuming you have the car setup for it.

ps: spent the afternoon looking at motec data at the office and my best lap (fresh tires) was actually a 1:39.7, but who's keeping track.

Btw, not sure if it'll help anyone, but here's what the motec lap data looks like for the 3 laps. Red = JvO, White = me in the morning w/ fresh tires, Green = my last lap of the day.

Still trying to work on rolling more speed from the middle part of the braking zone to the apex. I tend to over slow then pick up the throttle early...

edit: attached photo.. click for full-size. :-)

Looks like you worked your line through 7 for a tenth or two. What did you do?

This is a pretty sad lap time for me in this race... in fact, I DNF'd. Redtopz and Tway had a very successful weekend and they will be posting some impressive new lap times.

^^ That's actually a respectable lap at Sonoma, particularly with your ps problems and the traffic we had. I thought my T1 car would be a little faster there than it was. I had some high speed push again in the carousel and T9 and 10. I was able to dial most of it out on Sunday by making some adjustments to ride height, rear bar, and tire pressures. I also found that my front wheels were 1/2" toed out on Saturday. This was also the first time where I really noticed an issue with my T1 shocks. The transition from T9 to T10 was pretty scary in my car. It would wobble side to side and if I didn't time my turn into T10 at the right moment, it felt like I would go into the wall. More rebound would have been nice. My top speeds were pretty low which isn't a good sign for how much power my new crate engine is making. I'm impressed, but not surprised, at how quickly all you guys picked up speed at this track. Well done!

Not contributing a lap time but wanted to ask if anybody saw the Indy Car qualifying this past weekend at Somona. Will Power did a low 1:17.xxx to grab pole!

^^^ My last race weekend there in June the fastest Pro Formula Mazdas were running about 1:31.xxx, and I thought that was fast . . .

Which configuration did they run? The grand prix course we are all familiar with including the Carousel, or the NASCAR course that bypasses the Carousel?

Do the IRL guys run a different configuration than the typical track day? I know NASCAR runs something different, but have never been to Sonoma.

They run a different config. Instead of T9 into T10, they run straight from the esses down to a sharp right/left 90 degree combo. This removes the high speed section going into T10 which would probably be way to dangerous in those cars. They also shorten T11 to create some distance from the concrete wall at the end. My question is about T7. Did they make a permanent change to that turn because it looks completely different without the double apex?

You can see the track config in this video (battling with Mike Skeen in the GTR during the WCGT race):

My best lap of the normal/full track in my 2011 Cup is a 1:37.1, my best lap of the weekend in the World Challenge Cup (w/ their "new" track config) was a 1:37.0. The WC car should be a couple seconds a lap faster than my stock Cup, but it was the first time I've driven that car and without much practice wasn't able to get it setup very well. With an extra day of testing I think we'd have dropped a second.

I'm sure you know this since you race there all the time, but there two Turn 7s. I like the shorter one.

    Bill,
I don't think they changed it. They've always gone straight down the drag strip but don't veer left down the little dogleg like we do. Now they just take the first exit instead of the long T7 exit.

Yeah, I've done both T7's before. But I never went straight down the dragstrip like they were doing.
