    Spec Corvette Brings America’s Sports Car and World Class Speed to Aspiring Racers

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    Huntington Beach, CA, June 1, 2017 -- Today, Spec Corvette announces a new racing class for enthusiasts looking to go fast on a low-cost build that requires minimal maintenance. The class is born from a grassroots demand to improve the former SCCA T1 class dominated by Corvettes from 1999 to 2011. Recently in SCCA T1, several rule changes killed the once thriving class, causing cars, drivers, and enthusiasm to disperse elsewhere. NASA ST2 is popular, but the build requirements are getting more expensive and sophisticated. Spec Corvette is designed to fix these problems. Spec racing classes garner the highest entry participation of all classes, but are mostly comprised of slower, low-horsepower cars. Spec Corvette brings an outstanding chassis mated to a 400 horsepower engine that is economical to race and maintain for its category. LS engines, as used in Spec Corvette, are plentiful, powerful, lightweight and inexpensive when compared with other options.

    The excellent chassis of the C5 Corvette is further improved upon due to Spec Corvette sponsor partnerships with aFe Power, Wilwood Racing Brakes, and Falken Tires. Special bundle packages and deeply discounted pricing have been negotiated with these manufacturers to give Spec Corvette racers the ability to build cars with top-performing parts for less than $20,000, including the purchase price of the vehicle. Suspension parts from aFe Control include single adjustable coil-over shocks, racing sway bars, spherical a-arm bearings, camber kit and tow hooks. Wilwood Racing Brakes has packaged a special six-piston front caliper and mounting kit mated to 355 mm two-piece rotors, pads and stainless-steel brake hoses. Falken Tire is providing its fast new 200 treadwear 615k+ performance tire as the spec tire for the series.

    The $20,000 or less build cost of a Spec Corvette is based upon the C5 base coupe, FRC or Z06 platform. That build cost includes everything needed to start racing with a competitive car. Included in that budget, in addition to the items from series sponsors, are all.............

    We have the options to run with SCCA, NASA, Speed Ventures and others. NASA is difficult as I understand they like to force an exclusive relationship.

    What makes the most sense right now in southern California is for us to race with Speed Ventures on the dates of the Corvette Challenge events. Other regions are yet to be worked out, but as leaders are identified in each area Spec Corvette will get more venues.

    have you tried the Falken 615K+ (spec tire) on a track Vette yet ?
    Supermiata S1, SuperMiata S2, Supermiata S3

    Cool thing is Spec Vette (3,200LB on 325whp ?) gonna be close in lap time with a SuperMiata S1 cars (220whp on 2,300LB + aero)... I see opportunities...

    A well known enthusiast's perspective embedded in the announcement:

    Spec Miata veteran Rob Burgoon says, "I've been patiently waiting for a class that has the potential to be the next Spec Miata. To replicate the success of that class, you need the right chassis and the right rule set. I believe the C5 coupe is that chassis. By leveraging the lessons learned from Spec Miata, T1, and more recent classes, we can create a rule set that will provide better for racing, faster lap times, easier tech, and a more cost-effective experience."

    Not me personally, but one of our racers got to try a set a couple of weeks back and he ran about a second faster than the regular 615k. It appears the tire will hold up OK to 30 minute race sessions.

    We are starting the series on the LS1 engine that will make around 325 RWHP. Later we expect to covert the cam and heads on the LS1 to the LS6 spec and make about 380 RWHP.

    We are setting minimum car weight with driver at 3250 lbs. We don't want any exotic work or expense to make the cars super light. We want to keep them close to OEM in most respects.

    Opportunities to be on the other side of the race track I hope. No need to disrupt either perfectly good spec race with dissimilar cars.

    I have been racing in mixed class races for years. It makes for more interesting racing in my opinion, but I can also understand those concerns from those who don't like it. Even World Challenge and Trans Am races I have done have mixed classes. The only time I have gotten to not race in a mixed class is at the SCCA Runoffs.

    Regional first and if the market demand is there it will go national.

    That makes sense.

    Even national classes have to be built from the ground up locally and regionally to start achieving mass/momentum. That takes time. I suspect that's why so many national classes fail to grow quickly (or at all); there's often not enough local attention razor focused on local growth. Certainly helps anytime you have a good group of locals who all want to do the same thing.

    It's also a good sign that there are a decent number of caged cars that are close to the spec now, i.e., entry initially doesn't predominantly rely on a lot of new tub-up builds (and the complexity/cost that goes with it) to get the class subscribed to a healthy level. Recent classes seem to point to that as a potential stress point.

    This sounds like a potentially great spec series. Instead of trophies for the winners maybe big gold chains with medallions.

    The most fun I had racing was back in the old T1 days before 2012. Oli was head cheerleader luring unsuspecting corvette drivers down the slippery slope from racing seats to rollcages. We became a tight knit group where dinners were spent sharing how to go faster. I think those were the earliest seeds of speccorvette. They were our first involvement with vendors evaluating a rapid prototype vette front brake kit that is still used today. They were our first collective posturing with a sanctioning body SCCA. A lot has been learned since that time collectively and individually as to what works and what doesn't. I'm betting speccorvette will be very successful.
