    Default UTCC / Hyperfest 2018

Ultimate Track Car Challenge / Hyperfest
    Virginia International Raceway May 17-20

We are taking Bullet, our converted Supermiata S1 (92 Miata). Ryan Passey of Goodwin Racing is taking his LFX powered (91 Miata) "Hypermiata".
UTCC is a no holds barred, no rules time attack competition held at VIR every year. It's put together by Grassroots Motorsports. Coincides with NASA's Hyperfest which is a motorsports festival with live music shows late into the night, vendor rows, drifting, w2w racing and lots of other stuff going on.
It's probably the single largest amateur motorsports event in North America. Tens of thousands of people will filter through the gates during the 4 day event.

Bullet is roughly 2300 lbs with driverm=, making 400whp with a 6 spd Quaife sequential transmission. No hard data but we estimate it makes 1200~1500lbs of net downforce at 100mph.
Hypermiata makes around 340whp, weighs closer to 2100lb w/ driver makes more downforce.

Actually is goes fwhooosh, pow, fwhoooosh, pow, fwhooosh with a background "screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

Straight cut gears in the sequential are freakishly loud, rising in pitch with road speed. Flat shift ignites unburnt E85 in the exhaust and shoots a nice fireball with each upshift.. POW!
Then there's the wastegate chirping even though its recirculated, still chirps.

    It's very loud

How does one estimate net downforce? That seems like a massive amount!

-Published CFD numbers for the foil in free stream (ideal conditions), corrected down to allow for turbulent wake off roof.
    -Net lift of body
-Surface area of splitter plus some known pressure differentials measured at the nose, again corrected down to be conservative.
-Changes in ride height observed at speed

Could be a lot less or a lot more, but it's pretty safe to estimate over 1000 lbs at 100mph. Thus the term, "estimate".

Can't wait to see how things shape up!
I think both cars and drivers are going to surprise many of the east coasters.

Sounds like a great show idea. Let me know if you sell it, I'd love to work on it.

At those numbers it would make a great substitution for a Cessna 152 wing.

That's an estimate of total net downforce for the whole car, front and rear aero. I imagine Ryan has some similar net lift estimates.

Super excited. I've been wrenching and grinding away like a madman every day since I got word I was accepted. All the credit goes to 949Racing / Supermiata for making the logistics possible for us to go.

The Hypermiata will be largely the same car I've been campaigning, 325whp and 2300lbs with driver. The major update is a new front end that Moti and I have been working on together, which should be a huge step forward in both downforce and less drag. New, even bigger dual element wing in the rear to suit.

Funny to think I'll be the low power car of the pair. Bullet is going to be an animal, major sledge hammer approach, but Emilio and Sonny are the guys for the job to wrestle that thing to what I expect will be a great lap time. Hopefully we can both raise some eyebrows among people who never thought Miatas could play in the deep end.

It's been a lot of long hours to get the new front finished in time for UTCC (original deadline for next event was June). New GT1000 wing at the rear to balance. Tested Friday at WSIR with the 949 guys. Mega grip, doing 1:27's while just cruising and doing systems check on cycled RC1s.

Lots of scraping, ride height was a little too low. Lost a CV joint boot on the right axle which ended the day, but I had found the weak points that needed correction so it was job done. Sat/Sun were long days. Built struts to support the rear endplates (GT1000 is an animal, serious suction under that wing, Emilio and I were both bending the endplates through T8 and down the front straight). Resized the front endplates, made new titanium wear strips for the front endplates with rounded edges to reduce the shock when they scrape, added an additional mounting point in the splitter with corresponding mount in the frame (good problem to have, tons of downforce), pulled the axle and replaced the boot, raised the car a half inch front and rear to improve clearance. Got it buttoned up last night and the car's with 949 now.

Three days to catch up on sleep. I'm not stoked about the weather forecast, there's definitely going to be rain at some point this weekend.

Just wondering have you made any aero enhancements to the NOSE of the NA (from the turn indicators bottom / belt-line up) other than Hood vents?

Hmm from the beltline up, excluding the hood vents... headlight lids are a bonded part of the hood so no gap for air to get into. Front fenders are vented. Wipers removed.

Just below the beltline, this airdam is new. This version with an adjustable radiator inlet size so I can balance cooling and drag according to the ambient temp.

Testing at SOW Sunday. Rear springs too soft so we had a substantial push everywhere. Min speeds nothing special. Made up for by the way it leaps from turn to turn. 125mph over crest in the chicane. Car would easily go faster through there but I was ascared.
Steady 25mph wind blowing up the hill, about 70°. So relative windspeed before the chicane would be around 150. Windshield was bowing in a bit. I estimate it would sneak into the 1:15's with the stiffer rear springs, <10mph wind and a 55° day. This on 245's. Easily enough power to benefit from 275's but they don't fit under our fenders. So it's under tired. That would likely be another .7s or so.

Does that thing have a throttle.... or a warp drive? Looks like a blast to drive.

Wow, that acceleration is just insane! Looks like there was some time left on the table too by the car holding you up at the end.
