Default Long Beach City Council to Discuss F1 Bid

I am not holding my breath, but this is interesting:

The Long Beach Press Telegram is now reporting that, at a meeting on Tuesday, the city council will discuss the issue of the race lease tomorrow evening, claiming F1 bosses “want the city to open up the bidding process“.

The Long Beach Press Telegram revealed that, in a letter to mayor Bob Foster last May, Ecclestone expressed interest in taking F1 back to the streets.

“Please be advised that Formula One is interested in returning to your city, and we will consider the appropriate entity to make such a bid if you decide to permit such a process,” Ecclestone added.

It does appear, however, that this would involve F1 replacing Indy Car, so this could, in part, simply be a bargaining ploy in the current lease renewal discussions with with Indy Car.

Long Beach is not a good venue for F1. We have a great venue for U.S. Grand Prix at CoTA, and I doubt that the USA would get TWO F1 races per year -- no other country does.

Not to mention that Long Beach is "just" a street track without, IMO, the cachet of a Monaco, Melbourne, or even Singapore.

Could simply be a bargaining chip - or a pipe dream.
