    Default IMSA Revises Daytona Result

    Interesting wording.

Ingolstadt/Daytona, January 27, 2014 – About four hours after the end of the race, the organisers of the 24 Hours of Daytona (USA) have issued a revised result for the GT Daytona class.

The IMSA revised their original decision to impose a time-penalty on the #555 Ferrari. The #45 Audi R8 LMS of Audi customer team Flying Lizard Motorsports, which had originally been declared as the winner of the race, was moved back to second place. The organisers have pledged all participants to excuse the confusion they have caused.

The Team Flying Lizard Motorsports reserves further action against this decision and would like to comment not before Monday.

Romolo Liebchen, Head of Audi Sport customer racing: “It is unfortunate that the events after the race cast a shadow on a really great race in the Daytona GT class. Probably this race deserves two winners.”

    – End –

The Ferrari was originally penalized for "incidental contact" that caused the Audi to go off track on the last lap of the race, giving Ferrari the win in class, but the original penalty gave the win to Audi. The video replay showed there was no contact whatsoever, so how can there be "incidental contact"? I think that is why the win was given back to the Ferrari in the final analysis. It was just some really close racing; I didn't think the original penalty was justified.

What about on track exit, he pretty much didn't leave much room. It was close. If the Audi didnt go off, there would have been contact. They were side by side, maybe the audi was 1/4 car overlap. I dunno, just my observations from the video.

The Ferrari got robbed of their podium celebrations and photo op though in the end. A bit bittersweet victory.

The kink is probably the worst place at Daytona to attempt a pass on the outside. What happened was wholly predictable.

If there was a concrete wall there instead of grass, the Audi would have lifted. Not an easy place to pass but it was good to see some hard racing at the end of such a long event.

A half lap earlier the Audi shunted the Ferrari thru the bus stop. Not sure why the Audi wasn't penalized for unavoidable contact.
