Default Gamer-to-Pro Racing Driver Nissan PlayStation® GT Academy 2012 Competition Launches

    From Autoracesponsor.co.uk

    http://autoracesponsor.co.uk/2012/05...mber_111878808

May 1st, 2012 – The Nissan and Playstation GT Academy initiative, founded in 2008 is so, so great, in so many ways, Auto Race Sponsor is delighted to hear that has expanded into four separate competitions, kicking off today. British Motor Sport bosses and Captains of Industry should sit up and take notice.

Here’s the spiel: Nissan and PlayStation® have joined forces again to run the fourth year of the innovative GT Academy virtual-to-reality racing competition. While the four previous GT Academy graduates line up in top-level race series in 2012, the programme that set them on their path to motor sport fame has been expanded and will now incorporate four separate competitions for Europe, Germany, USA and Russia.

1.5 million hopefuls have tried out for the GT Academy since 2008, and graduates of the dreams-to-reality programme have so far netted a Le Mans 24 Hour podium and won the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup and Blancpain Endurance Series. In January of this year an all-gamer line-up made history when they finished on the podium of the Dubai 24 hour race.

A brand-new gaming format for the European GT Academy has gone live until 24 June. An eight-step qualification programme, that can be played online by anyone with a PlayStation®3, will use the best-selling Gran Turismo®5 as a base, but has been specially developed by the game’s legendary creator, Kazunori Yamauchi.

The fastest PlayStation® gamers from each country will join winners from a number of live events to compete in thrilling national finals in July. The action will then make the transition from the virtual world of PS3 to real Nissan sports cars when the winners of each National competition are invited to take part in the intense international Race Camp competition, which takes place at Silverstone Circuit in August.

The ultimate winners of each of the GT Academy competitions from Race Camp will then be put through an incredibly intensive and thorough Driver Development Programme to prepare them for the chance to take part in the challenging Dubai 24 Hours in January, 2013 – the ultimate competition prize.

GT Academy is now established as a potential route into top-level motor sport. Lucas Ordoñez (Spain, winner in 2008) took second place at the 2011 Le Mans 24 Hour race and will aim for one better this year racing alongside father-and-son pairing Alex and Martin Brundle. Lucas will also contest the full European Le Mans Series in the Greaves Motorsport Zytek-Nissan LMP2 car. Jordan Tresson (France, winner in 2010) is racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship and Le Mans 24 Hours in the Signatech Nissan LMP2 car. Jann Mardenborough (UK, winner in 2011) is racing a Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 in the Blancpain Endurance Series while his American counterpart, Bryan Heitkotter, will drive a Nissan 370Z Nismo RC in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series in the top GS (Grand Sport) class.

“Being able to use our GT Academy graduates in our ever-growing range of top-level motor sport activities is another example of Nissan’s innovative approach to everything we do,” explains Darren Cox, General Manager Nissan in Europe. “If we didn’t believe in the drivers they wouldn’t be in those seats, but GT Academy has exceeded our original expectations and each year has provided us with some outstanding driving talent. As our drivers continue to impress on a world stage, GT Academy continues to expand. I would urge anyone that feels they have the talent to get involved and give it a go. GT Academy is a real, credible and exciting route into motor sport that will not cost you anything thanks to our partnership with PlayStation®.”

Kazunori Yamauchi, President of Polyphony Digital, adds: “It makes me very proud to see the graduates of the GT Academy racing around the world with Nissan. This year we are aiming to make GT Academy bigger and better than ever before and so I am creating a new series of driving challenges open to anyone with a PS3 (terms and conditions will apply). “You don’t have to be an expert to have a go. Added to that, each country will host live GT Academy entry events to ensure that as many people as possible can enter the 2012 GT Academy”.
Details of how to enter GT Academy Europe 2012 can be found on various platforms including: GT Academy | Facebook,

Gran Turismo: The Official Site - Country / Region Selector and GT Academy (@GTAcademy) on Twitter.

I tried out last year. Barely got cut from the top 32 to be national finals. I am definitely trying again this year. The funny thing is that I think the video game portion of the competition is the hardest part. If I get to England, I think it'd be easy for me.
Driving to the limit is my goal.
Winning with Team 949 Racing is merely the result.
    2013 NASA TTD National Champion
    NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill Winner: 2011 E2 Class & 2012 E1 Class.
Multiple wins in NASA PT and WERC series, with many more to come.

Cheer for us during races throughout the year and like us on Facebook and Twitter!

Interesting. I do have a PS3 and GT5 and a Logitech G27. I am also pretty handy and decent in GT5 with the wheel. Maybe I'll give this a try.

Emilio, that is pretty awesome. How did you manage to get your hands on that guy? Or did he reach out to you and your team?

On a side note, it is said that ONLY "Round 8 Event 5", if you make it past the previous 7 Rounds will count for qualifications of the Top 32 Fastest lap times. Basically get GOLD on every event in every round to get you the opportunity to "Time Trial" as many times as you wish in Round 8 Event 5 for the top 32 spots. Those 32 will then get flown in July to Florida for the National Finals. The top 16 from that will get flown to Silverstone to fight for 2012 GT Academy Champion.

So far so good for me. lol.

Dean Thomas, another of our team drivers, met him during a Mustang Challenge driver search thing. He was impressed with Sean and kept his contact info. Sean came out to test with us a few weeks before T25 and we liked what we saw. Talent, real level headed young driver. Great to see his career taking off with the help of a few sponsors backing him.

That's pretty impressive. I took a crack at it today and retrieved my dusty copy of GT5. I'm lucky to be within one second of the top times on any challenge that has more than 2 corners. On the other hand, getting golds is still very easy. I wonder how challenging progressing will be in the final rounds.

That said, I encourage you to quit.

hahaha. Yeah, Event 5 for Round 1 and Round 2, im ~1s off their times. So hard. Shaving tenths is a ***** lol. I believe future rounds will be tougher to get gold. So by the time Round 8 rolls around, top 20,000 will make it.

p.s. my rankings went down since 200k more ppl showed up to play lol.

Im ranked 1370* out of 1million + in Round 8 Event 5, where it counts. Right now im 2.8s* off the leader. Goal is to get into the top 1000 and i'll be happy. 2 days left or so before GT Academy ends. Good luck all!!

"Bryan Heitkotter, will drive a Nissan 370Z Nismo RC in the Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series in the top GS (Grand Sport) class."

fyi: Heitkotter took the starting pole in Nissan's first appearance. He hung in pretty well with the big dogs and finished somewhere around 6th place.

damn!!! That right there is just natural raw maybe even god given talent. It takes us mere mortals a few years to a decade to at least get up there in the Amateur races. I foresee he will be doing Le Mans in no time.

Any in car footage of this guy? Besides the GT Academy footage at Silverstone.
