    Default WTCC in Macau 2009

    Hey all,

I am planning a trip to Macau this November to watch the WTCC race on Sunday, Nov 22.

Looking for folks who have been to the race and perhaps offer any tips wrt to hotels, places to visit, buying tickets via phone first or in person etc.

I heard that it's better to stay in HK then travel to Macau for the race. On the other hand I was also advised that it's better to say a day or two in Macau.

    Any help/tips greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Macau is huge now !! I believe it surpassed Vegas in gambling revenue last year. hotels are bigger and fancier than ones in Vegas (u would think that's not possible).

but attendance has been down lately, after China tightened up on visa (whatever you call it, even though it is the same country). 80% of revenue comes from Chinese traveler from mainland. so probably a lots of hotel rooms sitting empty, that's my guess.

so I think it is no longer true it is better to stay in Hong Kong vs. Macau.

I took a day trip to Macau (after a meeting with a client in Shenzhen for a business trip) a few years back. I visited a couple casinos (TONS of them and lots of construction going on), ate some great Portuguese food (Macau is a former colony of Portugal), and the Macau Grand Prix Museum.

BTW, I in stayed in HK because most people speak English there and hardly anyone spoke English in Macau. Staying in HK can be pretty expensive; not sure what the rates are like now in Macau.

    Thanks for the replies!

I have actually been to Macau. But that was in the early 90s. My last visit to HK was 1995. I am sure a lot of things have changed.

And I heard now there's a direct flight into Macau from LAX? Through Cathay I presume?

As far as hotel, I have a few friends who work in Macau and one actually works at a hotel, let me see if I can help you out, pm me for details.

Might be there racing macau this year if I collect enough points in Asia Touring Car Series. If thats the case, keep an eye on CTM cup, I will be there racing this 2004/2005 podium car, 270whp EP3 type-R. Car is a bit outdated in today's standard(wide fender, wing, etc..closer to WTCC rules now) and engine needs rebuild, but its nice of my buddy to sponsor me the ride, I guess driver will have to make up for the car's handicap. Hopefully I can get in WTCC within the next few years(dream).

Very cool Charles! Let me research a little more on the lodgings in the area and get back to you.

But I am still quite unsure about the tickets. Do I have to call Macau to reserve the tickets then pick them up in person on race day? Or can I order them online somewhere? I went to http://www.macauticket.com/ and arrived on the GP page but no links to purchase online.

You can call and reserve a ticket. Either buy through Hong Kong or Macau and go pick it up upon arriving.

If I am lucky enough to race in macau, I will try to get you a pit pass.

    Hey Charles,

Thanks for the deal! I reserved a pair of tix for Lisboa Bend. Row C, 143/144. Seems like good seats?

Now on to plane tix and hotels. I have been told that Mandarin Oriental is near and decent but a bit older. What do you recommend? I know the big players like Venetian and Wynn are there too but are they convenient to the track?

    thanks!

    Updating an old thread.

We attended the race and love it. First time in Macau as well, so we went to the usual touristy spots. The weather was really cold but was better on race day. I heard 2008's weather was hot and humid. Definitely plan on 2010!
