Default The Worst Wack-ball Tail Lights?

I thought the 370Z tail lights were ugly, until I saw the 2013 Ford Focus:

2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR 6-MT - when I need a backseat, 4-doors, or a real trunk, and still want to haul ass . . .

Why are car companies doing this? I thought designs made by committees were supposed to be inoffensive and boring.

Generally speaking, cars have been getting uglier since 2003, when BMW went from the E39 5-Series, to the god-awful looking E60 under the direction of Chris Bangle. BMW is a design leader, and a lot of other car makers, including some of the Japanese, want their cars to look like BMWs. The E39 M5 was in many ways the perfect 4-door sedan. RIP.

I have one that i intend to keep for the next generations
I am a diehard fan of the "shark" design,i used to have almost any BMW model from 70s,80s and 90s.Not many manufacturers have "evolving" design like BMW in the past.I take the E39 as the ultimate shark. It looks so complete that i dont feel need to add anything, even some fashion wheels. In that line of thoughts, any further attempt to improve it's design would have ended tragically. There are many examples in the modern car design for that.

    bawareca -

I owned the following BMWs, which I bought new:

    1988 528e (E28)
    1990 535i (E34)
    1992 325is (E36)
    1995 M3 (E36)

I daily drove the M3 for 8 years and 90,000 miles. Great car, wish I had kept it. The 535i was a great car too, but I made the mistake of getting it with slushbox instead of stick--always regretted that.

Since trading in the M3 in 2003, I have not owned a BMW, and think they have become so ugly (although the latest generation is somewhat of an improvement over the Bangle cars) and are too heavy and laden with useless luxury doodads. It used to be that you could get a manual gearbox in any BMW, even the 7-series. Now I don't think the M5 and M6 are available with a stick. I guess I'm turning into one of those old guys who yearns for the "good old days" and doesn't cotton to all this newfangled techo-nology.

    <--- industrial designer

Those light designs integrate side marker/signals. You see it more on world cars, saves a bit of money on tooling to accommodate different regulations.

Yeah,E34 535i with stick was supercar in it's day.The problem with the weight is getting worse. When i first got the e39 it felt like a pig(and it's wagon),and now when I got the E60,the E39 is like a 2002 E60530xit (only wagon you can get here is 4x4) is 5100 lbs GVW

Isn't that the basic reason for front wheel drive? Cheaper to make because you don't have to run a drive shaft to a rear differential.

I don't think either of those Toyotas come close to the new Focus for sheer wack-ball factor.

^^^Not at all. The Toyota is ugly, but the Focus is uglier. I walked by one of them in the supermarket parking lot yesterday, saw those tail lights, and threw up a little in my mouth.

Yes. There is less driveline loss, so they are a bit more efficient. They are also easier to package (flat floors) the interiors.

I still don't care for them much. Still, I have fond memories of my CRX Si, Acura integra, Civic Si, Escort GT, and Omni GLH turbo. Fun cars, simple, decent handling. Well, maybe not the Omni so much...

My '95 M3 was fun, but if I was caught napping, a soccer mom in an Odyssey or Accord would suck my headlights out leaving a stop light.

Yeah, well, when Crackertown Cops (Irvine police) look at two cars leaving a stoplight quickly, you think they are going to pull the silver minivan or the stylish whiteguy with the loud m3?

I liked the M3, but still think it's overrated.

Good point Who do you think "they" pull over speeding on the freeway-the guy with the mustang(M3,Z350,etc.) or me in the station wagon(which has some street kills over NSX,370Znismo and others of a sort, but that is another story)
