Default What Are Your Motorsports Plans For 2016?

Now that the off-season is upon us, what are you guys planning for next year?

I'm looking at getting back into W2W racing although I'm still not sure what I want to race. I'm entertaining doing one of the following:

    1. Sell the 06 Mustang GT track car and buy a gently used (only driven on weekends!) first gen RX-7 race car and race it with the SCCA and VARA (since it now qualifies for vintage racing with that org). I should be able to tow a car this light with my FJ Cruiser.

    2. Complete the Mustang into a full-blown race car (have the front half of the cage completed, strip out interior, etc.) and race that with the SCCA and maybe NASA. Buy fake gold chains to gain acceptance by the Corvette & Camaro crowd.

    3. Rent something to race. However, I'm a bit surprised at how expensive some rentals are (e.g., SRF and Spec Mustang are > $2K/weekend minimum.)

If I can rent a B-Spec car, I'd like to try that!

    How about you folks?

    1. Working on two new series sponsors to help grow SuperMiata

    2. Help bro in law prep his NP01 for the '16 T25. Maybe drive it in a few WERC 3 hrs.

    3. Finish my roofless 400whp Miata big aero project. Goof around in time attack and at least one each NASA ST1 and SCCA STU

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.

Each year I like to drive a track that I have not driven before.

For 2015 I got to drive COTA and Spring Mountain. Both great facilities

For 2016 I plan on driving INDE in March for a LeMons event.

The problem with this annual goal is the tracks keep getting further and further away!

    - snatch Tony's TH track record
    - take another 2s off my BWCW13 track record
    - stare forlornly at Tony's Sonoma track record
    - go back to Miller
    - go to Watkins Glen, shake my little butt at East Coast weenies
    - go to West Coast champs, have fun in BW dust clouds
    - generally use up lots of tires and drive the living snot out of it

Steal an NP01 at WSIR and see how many laps I can get in before they park a trailer across the front straight.

If it's a semi trailer and you're on low downforce setting, I'd say about 55 laps (fuel capacity)

    No goals. Just plans:

Compete in Spec Miata in all NASA SoCal events. Do a SuperMiata and Alfa Club event. Do a couple of enduros and as many arrive-and-drive kart races at Jim Hall here in Ventura as I can. Go to Miatas at Mazda Raceway.

I hope to set new personal bests at all tracks this year and have as much fun as I possibly can. Learn, learn, learn. Get more coaching. Clean and contact-free racing. If I get a podium, great. If not, see previous comment about fun.

One more racer's excuse I use it all the time
I plan to put together a bulletproof engine and have as much fun as possible and finally get to the potential of my car. Got another lost year because of work and my broken hell bone, but next year should be the one more dedicated to track and eventually even racing.

Can I talk you into a sonoma event and a tire donut every third race?

I've never driven or raced Sonoma, so yeah, probably. I can get the donut there if I do it right.

NASA socal's schedule is a little thin.

    March 12/13- Willow Springs
    April 16/7- Buttonwillow
    May 14/15- Auto Club Speedway
    June 18/19- Buttonwillow
October 13/16- Buttonwillow (Western States Champs)

    5 events? oy.

    Norcal
    March 19-20 Sonoma
    April 16-17 Thunderhill
    May 13-16 Mazda Raceway
    June 18-19 Sonoma
    August 13-14 Thunderhill
    September 10-11 Sonoma
    October 13-16- Buttonwillow (Champs)
    October 29-30 Sonoma
    December 3-4 Thunderhill (25hr)

One of these two sonomas I think. Probably the September one.

With only 5 events + sonoma, maybe we should consider thunderhill in august...

I have competed in 2 Runoffs so far and only ever thought I would do it once and be done. I got hooked so plan for Runoffs at Mid-Ohio 2016 and Indy in 2017. So my plan is to race locally to qualify for Runoffs. Since doing Runoffs I am also considering developing in my car so I stop bringing a knife to a gun fight. Since my car is not fully built to the class rules, I can't tell if my lack of speed is me or the car or both. However, the problem with having a fully optimized car is then you "know" you suck.

Yes, 5 events is pretty thin. NASA SoCal had 5 in 2015 also. 6 in 2014, 7 in 2013, 2012 and 2011... I wonder why.

Also... Laguna in May. w00t. I assume it's May 13-15 and 13-16 was a tpyo.

It's a shame they can't coordinate the calendars better. Both the BW events conflict with Norcal events and the May clash is really sad. I expect a number of Socal people would want to come to LS and I suppose I'll go play with NCRC for some BW seat time.

Have Oli or the almond farmer drive your car for a session and set a lap. If its you that sucks, that will save you a ton of effort optimizing the car. You can keep your a/c!

Going to race most the NASA events including the WC Nats.
Do most work on the stang and run in NASA TT including Nat's
Possibly running GTA in a stang (if everything works out)
That's not a Typo, I just can't spell no so well.

For 2016 were going to build a Lemons race car.
Lemons racing is like methadone for racers addicted to expensive racing.

No point in building a LeMons car. Buy one that someone has $8,000 in for $2,500. Starting from scratch is expensive!
