Default what makes a track day a good track day?

    Hi,

I am considering organizing a track day or two next year. I have been a participant many times, and I have made mental notes of what makes a 'good day at the track.'

I am curious to get some input from others.

    Thanks!

First,a lot of track time, second even more track time, and third, track time.It wont hurt if the corner workers dont mind flipping the bird on them and ignoring the flags.

First, a good track. Limiting it to California and Nevada, for me that's
    Sonoma Raceway
    Thunderhill Raceway
    Willow Springs Big Track
    Chuckwalla Valley Raceway
    Spring Mountain
    Laguna Seca
    Reno-Fernley Raceway

    NOT:
    Streets of Willow
Auto Club Speedway Roval or Infield
    Horse Thief Mile
    Buttonwillow
    Las Vegas Outside Roadcourse

Second - track time, track time, track time.

Third -- All necessary safety equipment -- ambulance, fire rescue truck, tow trucks, flaggers, etc.

Fourth - Laid back atmosphere -- not too many rules. Don't freak out if someone spins or has an off -- If they do it repeatedly then yes, talk to them.

Fifth - Notwithstanding "Fourth" above, do enforce the passing rules and encourage point-bys. Advanced group should be open passing anywhere on track, point-by encouraged but not required.

Sixth -- long run sessions. I prefer 30 minutes. 20 minutes is definitely too short.

Seventh -- Driver's meeting no more than 10 minutes. If you have n00bs, have a longer meeting for them.

    Eighth -- no download meetings.

    Ninth -- low price.

You need downloads so we can discuss how much of a roadblock certain people are and because public shaming is awesome.
    Do you understand?

I disagree with this, personally. I prefer shorter sessions and more of them and/or more run groups. I'd rather have 15 minute sessions and smaller run groups per session.

I disagree with Richard HONDA about no download meeting. I think downloads are good for the first 2 sessions.

I think downloads are good for the beginner groups. Maybe just one or two in the others just to get everyone on the same page and acclimated to each other/how things are running that particular day.

The absolute best track days I've had were under private rentals or when the NSX guys rented out Spring Mountain.

    Why?

    - Enter/exit the track whenever you wanted to!!! Open track day by the most basic definition of "open track"... track is open from 8a-12p. 1hr lunch break for workers. track is back hot from 1p-5p.
    - Low capacity... max of 45 cars
    - No "run" groups... with such a low turnout, people tend to be more courteous with passing
    - I have a group of friends whom I have dinner with weekly, have over for holidays and special occasions, etc that also love to track their cars... and we are anywhere from 12 cars to 20 cars strong. When half the attendees at an event are made up of your closest friends, it's a blast.

For beginners good instructors no more than three students per instructor and no more than 20 cars per run group. If a driver can't a minimum time in his group bump then down to a lower group after their first run.

    And none of this

I think a good track day entails
    1. A reasonable price; and
    2. five or more sessions of at least 25 minutes each; and
    3. strictly enforced segregation based on skill/lap times; and
    4. attentive corner workers who use the passing flag liberally, and enforce it.

    In that order.

    1. low car count
    2. when timing/scoring works and not have issues.
    3. price is reasonable, doesnt have to be dirt cheap.
    4. all safety personnel are trained and present with quick reactions. Low downtime for cleanup. And not walking around paddock or outside vehicles smoking when track is hot.
    5. 5+ run groups.
    6. shorter run sessions, but more spread out run groups and more sessions. (10-15 cars each)
    7. When you track with all your best buds
    8. When everyone is having a great time, no one crashes, breaks their car, drive their car home the same way it arrived.
    9. When everyone stays on the track and not throwing crap all over track/dripping fluids.
    10. When they stay on schedule.
    11. when i cross the finish line first (HPDE). jk.
    12. when they hand out trophies to those who cross the finish line first (HPDE). again jk. :P

    That is all.

    my biggest gripe:

I could remember the days that track day organizers set maximum of 25 cars per session....
now a day, 40 cars per session is the norm......
