Default what do you know about 360 degree camera ?

Thinking about buying a 360 degree camera. Wouldn't it be awesome for w2w action ?

Anyone tried it ? from brief Googling...price range from low $350 to $5,000. some will record in 1 file and you can upload to Youtube for 360 viewing. many require you to combine files and stitch them together in an app..sounds like way too much work for me....

so tell me what works, and what doesn't.....

here is a sample video I saw, thought it would be great for w2w action...

What brand was the 360 cam we looked at yesterday with the dual 180 lenses that autostitched and generated both facebook and YT compatible files?

    SuperMiata

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.
But obviously I just dont get it. -fatbillybob

I've been waiting for this thing to show up where I work for a few months now so I can "borrow it for a race weekend". We like it because it is configurable for live streaming but that is not going to happen in a racecar, so a standalone unit will probably be fine. The price is right and the quality appears to be way above a comparable cheapo Kodak thingie.

Now they just have to deliver. It's a few months late.

There is guilt by association when driving fast flashy street cars and it seems the bozos around me continually do dumb stuff trying to show off while looking at me. I want 360 video with gps speed so when "stupid does as stupid is", I got video proof I was being smart.

We ran a story on the 360 Fly in the June issue of Speed News. This one seemed pretty easy to operate. Using Safari to access YouTube doesn't work, but Firefox does.

this one is $350, 4.1 star. but not 4k

from the few video I see, it seems "4k" or "1080p" means it is across all 360 degree, so it is a lot lower resolution than your typical 1080p ?

It seems to me it would be great just to have one of these for video proof in case of an incident on track because you capture everything.

Yes Video is a great start BUT VIDEOS LIE!

Here is an example of a guy getting called out for moving over and closing the door on the straights at 160mph! But The data trace shows no steering movement up to the point of alleged impact.

This was a controversial bloody incident with no winners and I think a controversial political outcome where the driver was sanctioned and appealed and like a bad court case the public never got to hear the final verdict. So when video is presented I see it but take it with a grain of salt. We all need to be more diligent in our refusal to blindly except what we appear to see.

We've seen that one. My view is still the same. Red car got a better run out of the preceding corner. Black car driver didn't concede and moved over to left side of track to defend -- too far -- and a **** storm ensued.

Start the video at 56 seconds in. Black car moves over.

Sure looks like it but, actually, data shows Black car zero angle on steering trace held his line. Shortest distance between two points is straight line. Black has the line. Both cars out of class. Rear car in higher class and responsible to make safe pass. This is a case or two big swinging d!cks (aka Ferrari drivers) that came up short. No offense to either driver or Ferraris. Red mist, nobody won here.

I use a Samsung Gear 360 - but you "kind of" need a Samsung phone do you it - there are workarounds if you don't.

The newest "affordable" one is the Nikon Keymission360. It is a lot more rugged than the Samsung one I have. You kind of have to be pretty careful with the Samsung as it's not advertised as a "action" camera.

All 360 cameras I now require stitching - but you just do it through your phone and then you can post to Facebook/Youtube. But Facebook limits the video size so I've found it's approx 1 or 2 laps about.

The data shows no steering input, but the video seems to show a little. In addition, the black car was offline for the approach to Turn 5.

Here's a couple from some aero testing I was doing for a baseline using a customers car (with permission) that's similar to mine. Depending on what phone, tablet, notebook, or whatever you have you may be able to move it for the 360 views. You need a headset to get the 3D VR effect.
