Default Viper ACR smokes race cars and super cars all the same

As you know, plenty of people have spent more on purpose built race cars to not be able to match these times. One hell of an achievement by the ACR team. I really hope this create an uptick in the ACR sales and somehow keeps the brand alive.

Not to downplay that superb driving, but the Viper does it on street tires, with AC, speakers, carpet, a passenger, and groceries in the trunk. All for a very reasonable price.

No downplaying at all. His race weight is what his car weighed pretty much from the factory with all those accessories u mentuoned.
What peaks my interest is the v720's used to set those times. Haven't heard much about that tire. Although I suspect this story mostly about being the first to put huge real aero on a street car from the factory.

Billy Johnson, who held the Buttonwillow track record for a long time, posted the link below. His discussion doesn't include the latest ACR, but this series is very informative, and part one provides an excellent discussion of the car's early genesis.

MotoIQ - Automotive Tech, Project Cars, Performance & Motorsports > Projects > Dodge > Viper GTS

I'm guessing that it won't be long before Billy drives this latest ACR.

No, not me. That car is a beast and it's basically a fully built ST1 car with really good aero. Can't believe it's street legal!

Thanks, FYI my car weight was with me in the car. I've done a 1:45.7 rolling lap since then in 95 degree weather mostly from going faster in Sunset where the debris flag was waving. I lost a half second in that turn in the 1:46 lap. Pretty sure a 1:44 is in the cards at 8 lb/hp on a perfect day with cool weather.

I was thinking about why that Viper was not as fast at Buttonwillow as it was at the other 2 CA tracks, Laguna Seca and Willow Springs. I'm pretty sure the viper could do at least a 1:44 on 13CW based on the times at those other 2 tracks. One reason might be lack of local knowledge of Buttonwillow and how to use the berms which can add up. I think the local knowledge we have on that track in particular is worth a couple seconds. Or different drivers? Or that 13CW is more of a handling track than the other 2.

You need a lot of mechanical grip for BW. And knowledge too. Good aero is not so beneficial at BW as it is on the other tracks. With my less than optimal suspension/settings and a decent aero my BW lap times are very bad compared to WSIR.

I read the C&D article on this and was amazed to see that Dodge claims the ACR to produce nearly 2000lbs of downforce at 177mph (and 1300lb rear springs for that giant 6' wing)! While its certainly possible, I've only heard of full blown GT1/GT2 Le Mans cars making those kinds of numbers. I guess that would help explain the addressed disparity in lap times for tracks that favor aero more.

Did someone beat a 1:37.52 in a unibody car? I'm surprised the time has stood for 2 years now with all of the full blown racecars with modified suspension and sequential transmissions. The NSX still had a stock 5 speed with horrible gear ratios for BW.

Aero still makes a big difference at BW. Depending on when they ran, the track could have been a couple seconds off if it was done in the middle of summer on a green track. Plus the Viper has long gears which isn't ideal for such a tight track like BW -which is why the short gear ratios of the S2K make them very competitive at BW where they may be relatively slower at other tracks like Thunderhill. I wish Thill was in Bakersfield, its such a better track...

I'm sure the V720s are bespoke to the car.
