    Default Trackside alignment

    What are you guys using, or have you received positive comments on any such setups?
    We have a track 2 hours away from the shop, and we need to do testing with different camber and toe settings without traveling back and forth for each test.

    yes smart strings make getting the box square easier. But you -can- do it with kite string and jack stands too. (since this forum tends very much to DIY on the cheap)

    toe plates in my track kit have saved me several times

    Repeatability makes it worth the money. setting up four jack stands with perfect 90 degree corners every time sounds like a pain in the arse.

    There are ways to make it easier. First time you do it carefully in the shop, get the strings square. Measure the distance from the string to some part of the front hub or center of the wheel and do the same for the rear. Write that down. Then at the track, just move the jackstands until those distances match. Boom, square. The downside is rolling the car might bork it up.

    Rob has it right for quick string setup with jack stands (still a PITA if you are looking to keep your measurements within a 32nd). For at the track adjustments, I think you are better off using the strings at home to ensure there is no thrust in the car and then use plates for toe at the track.

    The biggest issue is repeatability as Brett pointed out, and precision. Without a dead level surface, repeatability and precision are compromised. Doing on an eyeballed level surface at the track is fine for getting you back racing after suspension damage, but if you are trying to dial in your setup, and want to use the info for another race in the future, your numbers are going to be off. The biggest help to keeping the track side adjustments to minimum in our cars (SM) is making sure that the ride height is correctly set before going to the track. Especially the front. This keeps impacts on CW to a minimum, and you don't have to mess with resetting front toe and camber after raising or lowering the car.

    We are working on fabricating some leveling stands with rolloffs that we can take to the track and dial in the setup. This way we can setup the car in the garage prior to the race with good numbers from the last track session and hopefully have very few adjustments needed at the track. Our ideal goal is to limit track adjustments to bars, pressures, and rear ride height. Nothing has ever worked out for us ideally though.

    for trackside, just bring the toe plates.
