Default Time to pack it up boys!

Video: Driverless car beats racing driver for first time - Telegraph

Driveless car at Thill going faster than a racing driver. The video is spooky and cool.

Some cynics would say the older F1 car were already doing this but now we know for sure as there is no one in the drivers seat.

Let's hope Will Smith lives forever for the inevitable day these things turn on us.

Dunno if they picked bad clips or used the track manager's first lap in the car as the bar, but it sure looks like it's driving like crap.

I'd like some more detail. The video seemed to avoid giving any useful information, and based on the clips they showed, I think my dog would drive smoother than that.

The details of the article mentioned that the automated car ran a four tenths faster lap than Dave (Vodden) did.
I wonder what the lap times looked like between both drivers.

Was that four tenths lap a hail mary?
Or was the car consistently as fast (or faster) than Dave was?

I agree. If I packed it up as soon as someone else was faster than me, I would have never started.

I am excited about street cars doing their own driving. Most of today's drivers don't seem terribly interested in actually driving.

I wonder how long it may still take to figure out W2W algorithms, where cognitive inputs are more important.

Sorting out alternate racing lines in reaction to unpredictable, competitor driving lines could be far more difficult.

I would be thrilled if I could put the car into full auto on the freeway and nap.

And, of course, would you then have to program in the "oh no you didn't just do that" algorithm to make the racing more exciting to watch :-)

Depending on how much cheating is done, this may be already solved to some degree in racing games.

Actually, this would be relatively easy as current road cars have this capability. It's next lane avoidance software. Volvo's got it in their cars. The Mercedes' new S-Class system is pretty trick in that it not only reads the car next to it but it can "assist" the daydreaming driver by steering away from the car, all this while reading the roads' roads markers.

    It's all available to implement.

I agree in that I'd love all vehicles to be automated in a designated CITY ENVIROMENT-too many crappy drivers causing stupid accidents and needlessly extending commute times. Just so long as they don't ban our "classic" cars and allow us to drive to the track

I could not share this excitement more. I am looking forward to the day I can ride a motorcycle without dying.
