Starts around $600 and goes up for paint.

Wrapping sounds like a brilliant idea if it can be done.

I had a guy at a local body shop that does custom work paint my helmet in 2008 and they charged 450 bucks, but my helmet has a fairly simple design without a ton of detail work. OTOH, how much detail can you see at speed?

For better or worse, when I'm in a car, people know it's me at a glance even if they are 75 or 100 feet away.

Sadly, it's almost that time again as my helmet is SA2005 so for next year I am assuming I'll need a new helmet -- at most, if SA2015's are ultra late coming to market , the year after.

I looked around when I bought mine this year. There is a flame-retardant concern of certain paints, from my research. Wraps were mostly for M-rated helmets, with very the Dude-Bro vibe. I ended up with a carbon fiber helmet, so I may revisit this later and have the thing custom pinstriped to alleviate the first concern. The starting point to some full-paint jobs was about $500 all the way to a few thousand.

I tried to wrap mine with red chrome. I ended up cutting out 2" squares and covering the helmet since the chrome does not like to go around bends. I think it took about 1 basketball game's worth of time. Next helmet will be painted.

John Matthew, who is the NASA HPDE3 lead instructor, had his kids paint his helmet, complete with hand prints and hand-written notes in Sharpie marker. It was brilliant and it's a good reminder that you always need to get home safely.

And it didn't cost much at all.

Helmets are already expensive enough and they need to replaced every few years anyway. Why would you want to make it more expensive and yet another thing you have to keep from getting scratched?

I've always had roughly the same paint scheme since I was a kid. I suppose in a closed cockpit car it matters less... but on motorcycles and open cockpit cars people can see it.

But when I figure out how to get the money spent on helmets and painting them to be anything but a rounding error in an annual race budget, I might reconsider.

Bought a carbon helmet (Sparco WTX7). My reasoning was it was cheaper to buy a spiffy helmet and put a sticker on it than a plain helmet and pay a few hundy to paint it

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.
