Default So I had a Battery Fire Today at ACS Infield 5/17/14

Everything was fine during the 2nd session ~11am. As i pull off into paddock/access road for the infield i smelled something burning. Smelled like plastic. So i pulled over in a access road and started to undo belts to investigate...Then i saw alot of smoke coming from the front left. I was like uh oh, another fire??? F*CK! Got out as fast as i can and turned the car off. went to grab my fire extinguisher...again... -___- popped the hood...and i see smoke pouring out from the driver side battery area...At first i didn't know what was going on, if the battery caught fire from something else or if it was the source. So i sprayed half of my fire extinguisher into the top of battery where there was a big hole with smoke just pouring out of it. I stepped back and looked around if there was fire anywhere else. Nope, it was just the battery that was burning. Smelled nasty.

I fire the remaining fire agent to see if i can knock it out...nope. And then it went on and on for another 25min. It was a Mirai Lithium Ion Battery. Pos...

I assumed my engine bay area got SOOOOO hot that it ****ed up the battery since the box material is made of plastic. Glad it wasn't an engine/oi/fuel fire. Or else i would have been screwed. All my friends came running from all around and stopped their cars as they saw my car behind me or in front of me...3 came with their own fire extinguishers. Good friends, all of them.

Pics and vids to come soon.

Li-Ion batteries in particular are subject to thermal runaway. This can happen even in your garage with a cold engine. If you want light use a PWC or ATV standard lead acid battery at about 11lbs. LI is way lighter but not a great choice.

Pretty sure it was XS lmfao.

I also run a mirai li battery. I'll have to keep an eye on it which sucks because I really love the thing...

After doing a quick search, it appears my Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) battery is also susceptible to thermal runaway. Do you happen to know if the risks of fire is just as great as lithium ion batteries?

Well this is why the battery belong in the back

Was about to type something along the lines of "sorry to hear this" but screw that man, great to hear that is wasn't a fire involving more components and fluids!

I run a Shorai lithium battery but only took it out for one event in the WRX, although I did daily it through the summer before swapping it into the Miata. Good thing mine is in the trunk now as well!

Isn't fire rescue at a given track the same regardless of who hosts the event?

If I am not mistaken, at Auto Club Speedway it is always the ACS staff as that is required in their contract. Even SCCA races are required to use ACS crew, but they usually have most of their regular guys there anyway.

At other tracks SCCA brings in their own crew that is second to none. All the other track days hire a team or have a pickup truck or something they use.

The ambulance/medics are always a hired licensed contractor.

The Cal Club team of SCCA has such good equipment and they are so well trained the Long Beach Grand Prix contracts with them for those races.

Here is an example of the Cal Club Towing and Fire Rescue Equipment.

During the races they are always suited up and ready to go.

I've never experienced a fire. I know I would have panicked. I saw my friend's corvette burn to the ground at a track day. He was lucky to get out! Anyway, glad you are safe. I broke my driver's side hub and axle and messed up my pad and rotor this morning at my track day. I only got 1 session in. $300 bucks down the tubes. I don't even want to think about what it's going to cost to fix it.

    Big Fire Cheung?

Why you not big Hire Cheung?

Dude go to batteries plus and buy an odyssey. If that fails just buy a Braille from tire rack. Also, that plastic engine compartment thing that used to separate your engine from your battery, it was there for a reason. Keeps the heat out of your battery and keeps your battery fire out of your engine.
