Default So about that new F1 quali format...

    What a disaster...

Easily the most confounding and boring qualifying session I've ever seen. Can't we just bring back the days of the single flying lap?

    WTH did I just watch?

Agreed. Confusing at best. Lots of track time with no cars running. Spectators got hosed, some teams (HAAS ) got screwed. Maybe a few tweaks and it will get better but I am not optimistic. What was so bad about the previous format?

    Very anticlimactic and confusing.
    Who makes these decisions?

Bernie, I was starting to like it up until people just stop even trying to qualify cause they knew they couldn't make it, even Ferrari quit trying to qualify.
If nothing happens and there is no one around why did it not happen?

It's also weird that the drivers knocked-out during the 90 second cycles can't finish their last flyer, but the last person to get knocked out at the end of the session can.

And I also agree that HAAS got screwed. Could be fun to see them in the race tomorrow, though. Probably more position changes.

Wow! That was so exciting I fell asleep in Q3. Tonight I will watch the race. I got an apple pie and ice cream. I hope the sugar will keep me awake.

Watching it now. Seems like incompetence on the part of Haas and most teams. Like they all failed to get the memo that you don't get to complete your current lap.

Edit: looks like 1.5 min out lap, 1.5 min lap, 1.5 min in lap, so 4.5 min, then 1.5 min out lap, 1.5 min lap, so 7.5 minutes + pit time to get a second session in.

    16 min q1,
looks like Grojean got bumped after 4.5 min to go, so they had 4 minutes to refuel, or a second lap early and 2.5 min to refuel.

I guess with the new system, you blow your lap, you're pretty boned. First elim happens at 7 min in, so no time to get back out.

For Q3, drivers who end up in 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 are all hosed after one lap. Not enough time to add fuel and swap tires. Unless they fuel for 2 consecutive laps, but that means the first lap will be slow because carrying more fuel. 1-5 will have enough time to refuel and swap tires to give it another go. so a 10min qualifying session ends up being 1-2 laps max. So dumb. Glad they are ditching it. Stupid idea. Wasn't really thought out at all. LOL with 3min 30s to go, no one on track. Everyone just didn't have enough time, so didn't bother. The spectators and fans got hosed. Made their way to the track and paid good money and didnt see much action in return. Bernie failed miserably.

Easy way to fix. 1hr session. 10 laps minimum. Avg of best 3 laps get you grid position. Can't make 10laps? you start behind those who can in order of laps completed.
