Default THE S2K - trackHQ thread

Since it seems that this forum has turned into the S2000 - trackHeadQuarters , why not have a thread dedicated to those who own S2000's.

This can be a place where people can review products they like/dislike, what works/dosn't work, what setups have the track records/etc...? It would also be a great place for new S2K owners to see what works. -Saving them time, money, etc... to find out if stagger is better, wings are better, what tire for the price, what to do next, etc...

EDIT: I don't expect any HPDE Champions to post their setups, but for those who are confident with their driving, themselves, and their cars, that information could really help fellow S2K owners out. -0.02

Since pretty much everyone on here tracks their cars, and some look similar to others (and some have mistaken certain people for others), post a current picture of your car as well to help identify yourself so other's can relate username-car to find eachother better at the track:

    (Subject): - Feedback
    Ex):
Tire/make-model (width/profile-diameter): Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 (245/40-17) - "Ist de greetest tire in alll zee vourld!!!"

    Default Identity

Good idea! I'll post here just for others to identify my car since its completely stock.

    Year/Color: 2005/Yellow

    Engine Oil: Mobil 1 0-40
    Brake Fluid: Motul RBF600

All others stock. Took out the tool foam but didn't take out the spare tire.

    Laptime/Tires:
    Big Willow Dry 12/15/08: 1:42/Bridgestone RE050 @ 32psi cold.

One of the reasons I got the S2000 is because of the vast setup/tuning knowledge of the car from the track community. So post it up guys so we S2000 newbies can learn from your setup and experience!

one thing I've learned in very few days I bought my S2000, is that top drivers in S2K community don't post much on their setup info. on Miata.net, you can find what national champ ran on alignment, shock setting, spring rate, etc... but top S2K crowd are pretty tight lipped.

I don't have much to post yet. since it is still stock. not long though.

Because they are confident with their driving (or super expensive cheating). It's one of the biggest classes in the country, and their are thousands of Spec Miatas out there. Not so much for the S2K community, so their little 'secrets' are tight lipped, and once they become common knowledge, they won't be so special anymore.

    -Did I say that?

    At least our theories match.
I don't want this thread to get off topic of the S2K owners posting their setup. BUT, S2Ks do race in a few club race classes. But the majority of people who track S2Ks aren't road racing, the best they are doing is HPDE or Time Trial events. In that arena, secrets in setup mean the world. Although important for road racing, a lot more comes into play as MiataCharles recently posted in a thread about his w2w race at Laguna Seca (which was an awesome and mature post/outlook).

    OK back to setups!

    I've noticed the same thing.

    My theory:

Miatas compete in established series (think Spec Miata) where classes have to run apples-to-apples specs. This leaves the driver as the only variable. Posting detailed specs ensures the equality of the classes and thus isolates driver skill.

The S2000's (unfortunately) don't compete in S2K-only race series that require standard specs for specific classes. The the closest thing S2K's have is the Redline Time Attack and Super Lap Battle. There are only 3 classes for each, and rules that separate the classes are EXTREMELY gray. Therefore, S2K owners do not want to give up valuable setup information online because it would put them at a disadvantage in TA/SLB.

Feel free to poke holes in my theory!

I heard a rumor that Grand Prix West was trying to setup an S2000 Challenge Series in 2009. Until they do (or somebody does), I guess I'll have to keep my (slow) setup a secret.

My name is Ed and if you ever see me at the track, swing by and say hi!

I'm going to be a whore and post pictures and videos now.

    My lap time records:

I did a 1:27.44 at SOW (CW) w/ Neova's. (HELD UNOFFICIAL S2K STREET TIRE RECORD FOR ONE MONTH ONLY).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cS4Jp_wU_I

I did a 1:28.92 at SOW (CCW) w/ R1R's. Billy drove my car and did a 1:27.67 on the same setup. (UNOFFICIAL S2K STREET TIRE RECORD?)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I29RfACVyZ8

    I did a 1:04.28 at HTM (CW) w/ R1R's. (UNOFFICIAL S2K STREET TIRE RECORD?)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHPY6ZE4uMc

    I did a 2:00.89 on the Roval @ Auto Club Speedway w/ R1R's:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcVI6lpH6rI

Lastly, I did a 1:18.XX on the Infield @ Auto Club Speedway w/ RT-615's (These videos are of me doing 1:19)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb55EJ57Lxo

Buttonwillow...argh I suck at that track. Once I get a respectable time, I'll post a video.

    Default setup?

Nothing special but thought I'd share...
    More info here: http://s2000blog.com/

    Hopefully this helps someone...
Four things I thought I've noticed with my setup:
    1. The Megan Track coilovers worked really well with the street tires
    2. Using a big wing like the J's/Voltex on my setup, unless almost flat, understeers a lot without front aero
    3. 0 toe in the rear without a bumpsteer kit was not fun...
    4. A catch can is important on an AP1

    SOW (CCW): N/A

    BW 13 (CW): 2:07
Excuses: 2nd time at BW and on the Megan Coilovers, SWIFT sways and zero toe in rear (Which I decided is not a good idea on an AP1 without a bumpsteer kit), no front splitter, and RE01-R

Haha...actually should be up and running at Buttonwillow this weekend! I remember it's you, congrats on the S2K! Car is very fun to drive, surprised you found it hard at the limit, I rented one and beat on it at Spring Mountain a few years ago and found it pretty forgiving.

In the spirit of the original topic of this thread, I'll post my $0.02.

Over the years, I've seen a higher percentage of S2000's attend trackdays. This is probably a function of the decreasing price of used S2000's. You can now purchase a 2000 for under $10k. So figure you will spend $10k-$20k for a decent used S2000.

For around $6k, you can exactly purchase a very basic set of mods and be just as competitive as the fastest S2000's.

    Here's the basic formula:

$2500 - A set of non-staggered rims with decent street tires. 17 x 9 et +63 mated with 255/40/17 seems to be the winning combo.

    http://www.maxrev.net/widetires.htm

$1500 - A decent set of coilovers. KW V3 and Tein SRC's seem to be the most popular choices.

$1000 - A GT Wing. APR, Voltex, and J's Racings are common choices.

$700 - A bucket seat. Many popular choices. Find one that fits your body type.

$300 - A set of race pads and some decent brake fluid. Popular pad combo: Carbotech XP10/8 and Cobalt XR2/Sport. Popular fluids: ATE Super Blue or Motul 600.

    Total: $6000.

Edit: You can probably spend less than $5k if you get all these items used. Paging Jaku!!!

Don't spend any more money on cool looking oil caps or 19" rims. Instead, invest your money on instruction, trackday entry fees (seat time is most important!!!), and basic maintenance.

Here are links to a few "basic" S2000 builds:

    My name is rob.

Looks like a link has already been posted to my build thread (see signature) and I don't quite feel qualified to give anyone suggestions on which direction you should go in as far as set ups. However I'm more than willing to let you take my car for a spin to get an idea of what my modifications and set up effect the car. Just grab me at the track, as long as I can trust you and its not gonna cut into my own track time feel free to ask.

Getting feedback from other drivers is one of the best ways to tune and I think I've finally got the car pretty close to being balanced out with all of its sporting modifications (except brakes....modulation is not possible). Bad news is that the car is definitely capable of breaking 2 min on 13CW but I have not been able to pilot it to that point yet.......Although.......we'll have to see what next Monday brings

Check out my '08 build on s2ki.com here....rob.ok track build.
