Default Running a University Study on AUto Racers

    New to the forums.

I am currently running a research project on auto racing through the Kinesiology Department at the University of La Verne in La Verne, CA. Being a broke student I can't participate now, but some day I have dreams of finally getting out on a track once I graduate.

I am attempting to reach out to as many people in the racing community as possible to participate in a study on psychological skills possessed by racers. This current study is modeled on a 2012 study from the University of Wisconsin published by Ebben and Gagnon on stock car drivers.

Any person with racing experience, any surface or class is welcome to fill out the online survey. Since it is online the responses are automatically assigned an ID # so there is no risk to the participants and all responses will be kept confidential. Should take about 10-15 minutes.

If you could pass the link on the anybody that you feel might be interested in helping increase the available research on auto racing I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your help.

    Here is the link:

    Thanks again,

Lighten up, Rob. Geez, you went to grad school. You should recognize an academic study when you see one.

Welcome, Adrian. Is this for a thesis or dissertation?

On another note, I spoke last week with a pair of USC researchers who might post on TrackHQ about participating in their study on the environmental effects of racing on people in the car and at the track (loud engines, sound waves, etc.). They did some preliminary testing at the NASA races at Buttonwillow in October.

You are on the wrong forum for this. ^^^

If need to do an assessment on pschological disorders then you have struck vein of gold here.

    lol.

    Adrian -

Welcome. In all seriousness, Oli has a point. I think that people (95+% men) who race cars have addictive personalities. Racing is like alcoholism or drug addiction, or compulsive gambling, etc. etc. We are one type of adrenaline junkies. Peter Egan, a senior editor at Road & Track magazine once said: "Racing makes heroin addiction look like a vague wish for something salty."

I will fill out your questionnaire when I get a chance. Good luck with the study, and please let us know where it is published when it is completed. Thanks!

I filled it out faster than anyone else. But I skipped to the last 5 questions. Is that legal? I didn't see any rules against that.

    Done.

My form did not let me skip questions. For example I never remember my dreams so how do I answer that question?

Answering questions about "teams" was tough. I don't really have a team. For most of us it is a very solo sport.

I objected to the questions that infer that Redtopz is faster than me!

There should be a question "Do you have dreams about being bullied on the track by Rob Burgoon?"

Yeah, I was just kidding to highlight the tendency for some racers to "bend the rules" to win. Surprised to not see any questions pertaining to "winning at any cost".

    You mean the nightmare questions?

I still have the occasional nightmare of a wreck I had doing a rally. That was about 19-20 years ago. I still remember the sickening feeling of the wheel going slack before we went into the ditch and rolled.

It's thread derailments like this that make me check TrackHQ 20 times a day. Brent, you bought a gold mine. Problem is you got to pull out the gold with a plastic spoon.

"When I am not practicing or competing, I still think a lot about my sport. *"

If there were a choice for "Extremely Often", I would have chosen it.
