Default Replacing a Mazda 6 engine?

My nephew has a 2006 Mazda 6 with a wasted engine.

Who/where is a trusty source for him to buy a replacement engine, perhaps one of the ones from Japan?

Who should he go to to have the engines ripped and replaced? He is in south Orange County.

How much might that cost for the engine and for the install?

You can buy used 2.3 and 2.5 Mazda engines for less than $1k at least last time I looked into it. The thing is if he's paying someone to do the work, it might be getting into getting another car money. I'm guessing it will be in the $3k range including used engine and labor. More if it's a V6.

Last NC miata we did Mitchell quoted 11.0 hrs labor IIRC. Probably not too different for a Mazda 6. Add about 400 for plugs, coolant, oil, belts, filters, etc. This means 1500.00 or so plus engine cost. So yeah, in the 3k range or sure. It might be a good idea to replace the clutch while you are in there if it is a manual and has some miles on it.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I will pass it on.

Do you have a recommended source for the engine?

    Who can do the work?

    Oli,

    Shot in the dark:

I have had good results hiring dealer-trained mechs for maintenance work to my wife's cars. A lot of times I find them posting ads on FB, CL, or certain forums related to the vehicle. Most are trying to supplement their incomes on the side. This worked great for the Pilot my wife drove. I know one Mazda mastertech who worked for two OC Mazda dealers, but he works for Mazda corporate now.
