F1 has always avoided having a shared course with Indy Car, for example. What would that do to peoples images if the lap times were just a couple seconds different with an old design dallara chassis, general public cant put things in context of rules...
Um, Montreal a few years ago.... F1 was like 7 seconds/lap faster than Champ Car IIRC. They are stupid fast.

Also, backmarker Toyota F1 car with Zonta at the wheel beat the ChampCar lap time around Laguna by a few (I want to say 3 or 4?) seconds.

He didn't take any pics and couldn't remember the lap times. He said they called them out every lap but didn't really pay attention. He works on lots of car/racing/drifting shoots but isn't really into cars.

Tom Cruise also flew the Red Bull helicopter that day.

I've seen same year F1 and IndyCar on track together, better driver was in the IndyCar, F1 car was still faster (both were 2002 and it was F1 drivers first time ever in the car). IndyCar drivers '94 Tyrell F1 car broke...which was also faster than the '02 IndyCar

I think that at some tracks your talking about more like 4 seconds. It's 5 million vs 500 million. Thats my only point.

Dude Montreal & Laguna are really short laps (~1:12, ~1:06) and you are talking 5-7s difference. Most of the tracks F1 runs at are much longer; so the time difference would greatly increase.

Also, this discussion is irrelevant anyway because ChampCar is dead and the current Indycars are MUCH slower than ChampCar was. They are probably slower than GP2 cars. F1 has by far the quickest cars right now.

Well its dumb of me to get into a speculation kind of discussion anyways. I think you got that I'm trying to say F1 doesnt have the quickest cars, I may have come out completely wrong there.

I stand corrected; At Road America:

    Qualifying:

'97 Benetton F1 with very good driver: 1:54.652
'02 IndyCar with very good driver (and not his car, 1st time in it): 1:58.782
'02 Benetton with Judd V10 (not a great driver, 1st time in car): 2:00.468

    Race:

    '97 Benetton: 1:53.046
    IndyCar: 1:59.075
    '02 Benetton (2nd time in car): 1:59.319

F1 car is clearly faster with an equal driver to the '97 or the Indy Car..

feel free to look through my photos and videos from that weekend: Road America 2008 pictures by sik02ss - Photobucket

there's some front straight fly bys standing at the outer wall (scary as **** btw with a modern F1 car barreling down the front straight wall side barely 3' from you)

Formula 1 has way more engineering in it that (almost) all sports.

Also, (please correct me if I am wrong) doesn't Indy have a ton more power than F1?

lap times from 97/02 are way too dated. Indy cars are around 700hp. I probably put my foot in my mouth speculating on this.

I believe other than Cruise's star power, it has to do with the fact he is short. how many Hollywood star you know that will physically fit in a F1 seat ?

I believe he has been beaten many times this season. I remember seeing a girl topping the list.

But, seriously... I talked to some of the Skippy instructors that worked with TC... the consensus was he wasn't bad, but wasn't great, but had ego issues... (i.e. refused to point-by faster drivers).
