I'm sorry Paul Walker died in a car crash, and my condolences go out to his family. I saw a couple of the Fast 'n' Furious movies as a sort of guilty pleasure.

But you guys are talking about him like he was Marlon Brando or Robert DeNiro . . .

I think the difference here Richard is that many SoCal track guys had met, interacted with and genuinely liked the guy. I never met him but people who have seemed to come away with a positive experience.

If he wasn't a track guy, I never would have started the thread.

^^^ OK (I never met him -- did he hang out at club racing or open track events?) But you are talking about him like he was Paul Newman or Steve McQueen . . .

From what I've read he was more of a Time Attack guy but I believe he did race in at least one 25 Hours of T-Hill.

I think with the pace that this world is moving (thanks interwebs), one could clearly get lost in the "relevance" of a superstar nowadays. To a younger generation, he is their "Paul Newman, or Steve McQueen" You've got to re-member, Tokyo Drift really blew the doors wide-open for the franchise and every film after that damn-near doubled US revenues, overseas. I'm sure you can imagine how this man was at the cusp of an emerging culture-Newman, and McQueen, as much as I love them, were not.

Oh, and that CGT-sure seems to be building on that bad rep. Seems as if they only allowed their Factory testers/racers to test these cars. Novice to moderate drivers need not apply!

While I generally agree with this statement... and I'd hate to use the cliche 'everyone does it' response... Here's a picture someone painted for me on a different forum that opened my eyes a little.

Your friend pulls up in a xxxx car which you have admiration for, but have never gotten a chance to ride/drive it.
You: "Hey! That is an awesome car! I really love those!"
Your Friend: "It's incredible, maybe later we'll go for a spin?"
    You: "That would be incredible!"
Friend: "Perfect. We'll just drive around the block... it's pretty empty out here on the weekends, so we'll get to open it up a little, nothing crazy..."

That exact scenario has happened millions of times before and will happen a million times after.

So I was listening to the radio this morning on KIIS FM. A caller called in who had FIRST HAND account on what went down. There was an issue with the porsche (idling issue), and Roger wanted to test it out and Paul wanted to accompany him. They said they would be back in 5min, but it later turned into 20min. 500yrds after they left their shop, 2 loud crashes were heard. Tire marks showed no regaining control of vehicle, also power steering fluid was seen PRIOR to the accident site, which leads me to believe he had some power steering failure/steering lock up, or something to that effect. So if he can't steer, he was at the car's mercy. Tire marks were probably from him braking hard while steering was either stuck cranked, or just not cranked at all and all he could was brake into the tree. Yes, speeds were involved most likely based on the damage and wrapping around the tree.

There were 10 people on the ground who rushed to the scene with fire extinguishers to put it out, but it was too late to save them. It was reported they died on impact. That was some force.

Tragic nonetheless. It is highly likely that they crashed due to mechanical failure of some sort, not from racing/hooliganism down the street. They are at a fricken chairity event, it would not have been appropriate given who they are to do that sort of behavior and promote that kind of antics on city streets. They were most likely literally testing out what was wrong with the car. They found out the hard way.

He was the only "hollywood star" to come for humanitarian help after the 2010 earthquake+tsunami in my country. I frankly could not tolerate watching any of the F&F movies, but he had a passion for cars and seemed to be a genuinely good guy. This is sad news, no matter what the cause of the accident was.

I recall he came out to a SpeedTrialUSA event a while back. Apparently, he had bought out an entire run group for him and his buddies. He brought out like 6 cars and was rotating through them throughout the day.

    Internet detectives.

    So many of them.

What's interesting is, your hearsay of the "FIRST HAND" account, is contradicted by other FIRST HAND [capitals makes it more accurate, even if it's speculation] accounts.
Point is, the rumor-mill is alive and flowing. Some people just can't wait until the guys paid to figure out what happened... ya know, figure out what happened.
