They did give the cars some weight, but it does not seem to be enough. Also, the suspension and steering racks on the new C6s provides some slight advantage, too.

I think the original C6 base with the 400 bhp motor was a pretty close competitor to the C5 Z06. But when they went to the 430 bhp LS3 (which is only the 2008 model year) the equation changes. I thought Oli told me that the C6s had to carry a lot of extra ballast.

I'm surprised they don't have to run a small restrictor in the same fashion of the 1.8's vs the 1.6's in Spec Miata. As far as I'm concerned running ballast is never quite fair as you get to position it to your advantage...but understood that this is basically standard worldwide.

Nope, they don't have any restrictors.

Default My report today includes some good news and bad news

The bad news is that I have slipped in the qualifying process from 8th to 12th to 13th. That still puts me up five places from last year... where most of you remember I actually started dead last after being late to the grid due to a Speed Channel in-car-camera SNAFU. In that race I started 20th and moved up to 14th.

The bottom line is that I don't think I drove to my capabilities yesterday, the only day I had brand new tires to run on. Today I ran on yesterdays scrubs as I figured:
    1. An extra set of tires were not in this race budget given all I have spent to get me and the car here ready to run
    2. Today we ran later in the day in warmer weather and I was not likely to improve my time much if at all even with new rubber. Most of the drivers went out on new rubber, but most did not match yesterday's times.

Suffice it to say I was not happy with my performance. I think the car is working fine. Some of the other cars might be prepped a little better and some I can tell have just a few more ponies pushing them down the straights. Given my car prep and my relative view of my abilities I would have liked and expected a finish just inside the top 10. Here is the full listing of qualifying times:

    More bad news to report
The real sad news is that McGinley put his car into the wall just after turn 10 in exactly the same spot he put it into the wall at the national on Labor Day weekend just over a month ago. He got the near totalled car fixed just in time to miss out on the race due to the crash the last qualifying session. He said to me, "I can't believe I did it again. I have thousands of laps around this track and I have hit the wall twice in the exact same place." He finished 3rd last year.

The 2nd from pole Zabinsky Ferrari spun today outside of turn three. I think he might have hit the wall. If he did it was minor damage, but he has a back-up car inside that massive 55' transport and 40' fifth wheel if I am not mistaken. I think that was his third spin there this week. He had one for sure in the rain right there and maybe another one yesterday as I recall. He was gridded ahead of many of us so he wasted our golden lap of qualifying with that spin as the yellow flag came out as many of us were winding up for our hot lap.

    Some Good News to Report
Bill Schepergerdes got his car fixed and into qualifying today after he stuffed it into the turn three wall on a rainy Monday qualifier. He did not even get to record one lap that day so he needed this run. While that is good news to report, Bill who finished 2nd last year in American Sedan, only gridded 10th today. I think he was disappointed with that, but reluctantly had to accept it given the circumstances. John Heinricy seems to have a solid pole position for AS and I expect him to run away with the lead based upon qualifying times.

Bill Haggerty is gridded #3 is SSB. He is within striking distance to be able to win.

I must say that my son Kristjan and Chuck Knox have been an excellent crew. They are keeping my car fit to race and win. The car just needs the driver to deliver the goods.

I am sure there is much more to report. When I think of it I will post it. If not, tomorrow starts with the T2 race in the morning.

October 10th, Friday, the day before the race

Today was a quiet day for me. I did not need to get up super early and go to the track. I spent the day up to lunch time getting caught up on work e-mails and made a few work related phone calls.

Then Kristjan and I went to Subway, got some lunch and then went to the track. We listened to the SRF race and CalClub's own Mike Miserendino went from first to second and back to first again to not only win the 2008 SRF title, but he won the SCCA Triple Crown, too. The Triple Crown goes to any driver who wins his SCCA Division, the June Sprints and the Run-offs. He is my hero.

Then we watched the Spec Miata guys dice it up. It was pretty clean racing for those guys from what I could see. Sammy Valafar got third. For awhile there I thought he was going to win it. He ran a good race.

I watched the GT2 race. It was a good fast race. The racing was clean and boy can those cars fly. It was impressive to watch them four wheel drift through turns 8 and 9.

I missed the T2 race this morning. There was some controversy on the last lap. Bill Zeigler and racing legend Don Knowles were really dicing it up running first and second. Both have immensely and immacutlatly prepared Phoenix Pontiac Solstice GXP cars. On the last lap Bill Z was making a pass on Don at the end of the front straight and they made contact. Don was spun and he apparently hit the tire barrier and was out of the race. Bill Z. and some others say it was a racing incident. The stewards saw it differently and penalized Bill 16 places. He is appealing that decision and I am not sure of the outcome.

I also saw two torqued up Formula V cars next to Don Knowles car. I think those to cars got into it at turn 8 and 9.

Tomorrow I race at 1:15 (11:15 Pacific time). You can listen in to Internet announcing at:
http://pluto.dvti.com/Runoffs It works pretty good. It is not crazy sports announcing, but actually decent coverage of actual racing events.

He finished 8th! Definitely a reliability race though with many people dropping out. Finished under a full course yellow.

    Congrats to Oli!

Many of you have asked about my race. I am sorry I did not type up the story, yet. I have been catching up at work.

Also I wanted to edit up the video first to post that with the story. I have had two problems with the video:
    1. For some reason I only got the first two laps
    2. My video editor seems to be giving me problems and I have not been able to edit it the way I wanted.

Here is is a large high res 250MB version for those who want to view that in the mean time.
