Default New project car 1993 EH6 del Sol Si, budget track whore all motor car...

Hi trackHQ members. I'm kinda of a old school track whore by internet standards. My first track event was at a wet Sears Point NASA event back in 1995 and I've been an addict ever since. Used to instructor whore a whole bunch to get maximum seat time. Got on internet forum war with with few ppl back in 2003-2007 on a few places like rennlist and corner carvers and honda-tech. Did a few time attack events in 2006 and 2007 but none of the car were really well prepped. Then I was over seas in Taiwan for almost 4 years and didn't do anything automotive during that time except drive my buddy's K20EG there occasionally. I was riding 50 cc 2 stroke scooter every where... that was about it. Anyway, I moved back to California recently (Nov. 2011), and I'm getting back into track whoring and cars on a grand scale. :-) Here is a new project I began:

I just picked up my second del Sol few weeks ago. The color is Milano Red. It is 100% bone stock except for some silly 16" ADR wheels. I'm going to use it as a demo car to show case a budget oriented track whore setup... It has the D16Z6 SOHC VTEC drive train. I kind of missing having a full interior car, complete with AC and Cruise Control.

Keep watching this log as we install and tune each part. I've decided to name this Project Cheap Dirty SOHC. Since we are on a tight budget, we will be choosing parts that are good quality but as cheap as possible so people can duplicate this car if they wish.

New member of the family! Meet "Cheap Dirty SOHC". AKMEE's new budget all motor SOHC VTEC track whore project... thanks to Dan @ RCREW for the hook up!

I'm debating if I should pick up a used Milano Red front bumper or just leave it like this...

del Sol seats with blue accents goes well with red exterior.

16" ADR wheels are probably pretty heavy and will also be soon.

Stock ride high is pretty tall and spring rate is way too soft.

Few dings and scratches but overall, pretty good condition for a car that is 18 years old.

Interior is pretty clean overall. Driver's side seat belt's retraction spring is very weak and it is annoying...

I'm not sure if this is original miles on the odometer!

Stock 22 mm front sway bar.

Stock Si does not have a rear sway bar, notice the large stock muffler it is heavy. A 2.5" catback will be among the first modification to the car.

Slammed USDM DC2 ITR vs. Dirty SOHC. del Sol is at bone stock ride height and yet it is still about 1" lower than the ITR!!

Finished title transfer and insurance recently. Opened checking account and fixed/updated my paypal so I can order the parts from ebay now. Lots of bushings, camber kits, LCA... etc. ordered from buyhardrace.com already. Just got a new in car camera mount and I got a test footage it came out looking awesome. Enjoy.

sorry about the lack of updates. last few weeks i was really busy on sourcing the funding and getting paper works finished up for business. by monday i will be officially co-owner of N1 Concepts. :-)

Cheap Dirty SOHC is high on my priority so you will start seeing regular updates here and on!! I plan to take it up to Sacto raceway to do some base line drag racing just like how I used to do it in the old project remix days.

You know, my mind was absolutely blown when, a week or two ago, I learned that the del sol has double wishbone all around. I didn't think there were any FWD cars with that sort of setup. Then again, I never paid much attention to Honda cars. Given its ultra low weight, how come we don't see more Del Sols slaughtering auto-x courses and whatnot? What makes them less popular than other FWD Honda cars?

Practically all Honda's from the late 80's to late 90's are double wishbone.

I've seen the del Sol do some serious lap times with a B motor, there was this guy that had a primer gray del Sol that hung out with Island Motorsports all he had was a B motor, coil overs and tires.

ppl love to make fun of del sol's. it and the miata was kind of direct competitors in the 90's despite one being rwd and one is ff. both are known as girlie cars kinda. lol. obviously both can kick butt on the track. del sol has identical suspension to the EG Civic (92-95) and DC Integra's (94-2000) so every suspension component made for EG/DC works on del sol's. the only difference is shorter wheel base which makes it more nimble at the track. not a bad thing. did you guys know that 911 has shorter wheel base than del sol? off the top of my memory 911 was 89.x inch for a LONG time. newer ones finally they stretched it some. del sol is ~93" if i recall. my 95 del sol was driven by Drift King before and he enjoyed it quite a bit:

The Miata has been somewhat rescued from the "girlie car" image by the existence of a robust Spec Miata racing class nationwide. Del Sol will always be a girlie car. It's the predecessor of the New Beetle.

Doesnt clint have to slb record for street ff? I think you need more than a budget d series to beat that. I always wanted a del sol track car. They look fun to srive on track. Whats you plan for the whole car build?

it's my twin cam del sol that's going for the Street FF record... that's going to be to-the-rule-limit build up... i just got that one running again recently and i'll take it out for couple of events before the rebuild:

del sol's are very fun. they can be had for cheap if you get lucky. you should consider.

I wouldn't underestimate Frank so quickly. The boy can drive. 190whp in what will probably be a 2000lb comp weight could hit 1:55 or so with aero.

Now why he wastes his time/money/talent with SLB and time attack is beyond me

    and i cant drive?

1.55 outta a 190whp NA del sol on street tires sounds like a hefty projection. I know frank is a good shoe, i know 2000lbs is light, i know the del sol is SLA suspension, but 1.55? i can see 1.59, but 55? if thats so how come more NA wishbone hondas havent been running sub two mins on street tires?
