Default new mylaps $200 transponder, what's the catch ?

MYLAPS X2 Direct Power Car Transponder Racer Pack - 1 Year - SafeRacer

costing 1/2 what it costs before. but comes with only "1 year subscription"...

what's the catch here ? do we need the subscription for the transponder to work with SCCA / NASA / SV / Alfa.........

I see an issue here: does this mean every time you turn on the transponder, it checks the date. once expired, it turns off the transponder ?

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

nstall the X2 RaceKey onto your dashboard with the provided X2 RaceKey Mount. The X2 RaceKey Mount connects to your transponder and to your vehicle's battery. The X2 RaceKey is used to check your subscription status and renew it when needed.

A USB cable to connect the RaceKey to your computer

Why do we let them monopolize the transponder business?

I was just going to post about this. The $205 is an annual subscription fee, which is bull****. Talk about a cash grab.

Much of the software I use has gone to subscription models, which I'm not a fan of, either. Monopolized markets are never good for the customer.

so do they even sell regular non-subscription model ?

or did my old transponder just went up in value ? costing more than the car now ? hire Moti to build a small roll cage for my transponder ?

^^^ Sounds like an opportunity for a home brew solution. How hard could it be to build your own?

Hold on, someone explain this to me.

It's a transponder that requires an annual subscription to work? That's outrageous.

It is outrageous, and the old rechargeable or hardwired transponders that once were priced at $360 for years are now $519.

I'm predicting a rush on existing inventory of the old transponders and rising Ebay prices on used models. If you want one, get it now before they're gone. You only need to use it two years to be money ahead.

I got worried about this last year when I started to see subscription transponders pop up so I stopped borrowing one from a friend and bought my own transponder. Dodged that bullet.

Only 1 hardwired, subscription free transponder on ebay currently.
I wonder if rental prices will go up too.

I'll just keep using my phone app with external GPS. It's usually within 0.1 second from my transponder time.

So if you are an organization that buys a new batch of these transponder will it cost $10,000 annually for 50 transponder subscriptions? Wow.

I think this only applies to groups that post to MyLaps for results. For SV we have in house method to post times I would think the X2 would not apply to SV reults. What about others like RaceHero?

SV may be the only group to post times, which is nice.

Downside, SV's layout is terrible. ASP.NET doesn't help either. DataTables would help dramatically.

Even if it's a subscription just for use of the results data and not the transponder. That's a hefty price tag.
That's not a Typo, I just can't spell no so well.

What a scam. Oh well, at least we know all that cash is used to employ only the highest quality web developers.

R/C racers face the same stupid outrageous pricing from AMB/Mylaps with transponders costing more than $100. The ironic thing there is that the founder of AMB was an R/C racer long before he built transponders (Peter Bervoets I believe.)

In that market there were a couple of other manufacturers that figured out how to reproduce AMB transponders, although the numeric ID they used was not guaranteed to be unique. Mylaps/AMB responded by releasing timing loop hardware that would not be compatible with their older transponders...and the transponders that emulated theirs . I am surprised that hasn't happened with full size track scoring systems yet. Mylaps probably makes more on the subscription model anyway.

They would have to take my hardwired transponder out of my cold dead hands.
