Default New-To-Me 2002 Corvette. HPDE Questions

Hi all. I'll just get this out of the way: The car didn't come with gold chains. 1/10 would not buy again. But seriously, they didn't have any in my size.

I can't wait to get on track with this sweet sweet plastic car. I still have the race car, but variety is the spice of life, and I long to return to something uncomplicated and oem. My initial research tells me there isn't anything I need to do to make this car track-worthy if I stay on street tires. Right now I'm on Evo V12s, and I do not expect to ever switch to tires with substantially more grip. So, the oil pan should be up to the task. If I only take it out on days falling under 80F then I hear oil temps should remain good for 5 or 6 laps per thirty minute session. Can anyone confirm My understanding?

The one thing I can't quite get an answer on is brake pads. I'll be using Centric Premium blank rotors. I have a suspicion that oem pads, or even pads from autozone, will work fine under these conditions. Any experience on that? Any pad recommendations? I'm trying to spend as little money as possible to get the job done.

I love the car btw. It's not nearly as engaging as a Miata, but it doesn't rattle like an old lady, it makes sexy sounds, and it's luxurious and plush compared to what I'm used to.

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.

Gonna need real brake pads. The rest might be ok if you're on cool days and chickening out when the oil hits 290.

Correct. 345hp, coupe with z51 package. Seems to have come with suspension bits and a power steering cooler, things that C5 convertibles don't come with.

As if! I would have to begin selling drugs just to afford body panels and rotors. Besides, the old folks are having plenty of fun. No need for a young-ish guy to go muck it all up.

    I admire your restraint.

I really like your plans keep things on the showroom stock side of the ledger while still enjoying this great looking car at the track.

    Price, about 0.6 Richard's S2000 units. Or, about $7,900.

Its immaculate inside and out, with the expected paint swirls from improper washing materials. It needed a new clutch and the purchaser needed to pay off a lien - I guess most people were scared off by those things. I have title in hand now, and a new clutch. I've been under and over it with a light and a mechanic and the thing is in great condition. Everyone wants to buy it off me.

I was initially looking for a Corvette with the plans of converting it to a race car if/when I become bored of the MR2. Then I found this Corvette and I'll be damned if I'm going to strip it out or modify it. It's too perfect. This is the kind of car you keep and give to your daughter. I'll just pick up a salvaged c5 or c6 z06 when I'm ready to sit on the other side of my motor.

every race car build starts with denial....

every car I buy was going to be for my kids......but the first time they misbehave (5 times a day), I say "you aren't getting my sport car, gonna convert to race car !!"

I did the same thing. My C6Z never received any race mods. It was to nice a road trip car. Drove it to Utah with a bike in back for a bike race once. Comfy and fast. Had some d/a coilovers on it for a while. Handled better on track but they rode like **** so I put the stock shocks back on.
There is a place for a car like this. The comfy seats were nice on the road but not enough for track use. I saw that as a built in "limiter" for track use. Kept me from doing any 9/10ths driving, which kept me from bending or breaking it.

Maybe give the Centric StopTech Trackday pads a shot. Check rockauto for them for pricing. I tried them on my dual purpose Miata and I was pretty happy with the the performance for the price. I found most of the research/feedback about those pads from the Corvette forums. I drive on them in the street and track, they are quiet, have nice modulation and feel, good fade resistance. I would describe them as better than Hawk HP, a *little* less aggressive than Carbotech track pads. Mine included new hardware (clips etc).

I have tracked them for more than ten 20 minute sessions, around town here in Atlanta, and they are holding up a lot better than I expected.

Speaking of which, what ever happened with the MR2?
Did you ever finish it? Has it been on track since we put the cage in it?
    Congrats on the new purchase!

    Beautiful car.

+1 on the Stoptech sport pads. I've used them on multiple vehicles, and just ordered a set yesterday for my rx8. They are dirt cheap, and have better pedal feel and fade resistance than most street pads. I did have some annoying pad deposit issues when I put these on an outback that was mostly driven mildly.

For what it is worth I took my Z16 on track for about four laps a couple of weeks ago at ACS. It is completely stock including unknown street pads.

When I picked up the pace after a couple of laps I thought I was going to die going into Turn 12. I stepped on the brakes and they just started stinking beyond anything I smelled before and the car did not slow well at all. I just took a cool down lap and pulled it in.

I recommended the StopTech TRACKDAY pads, not the sports.

Please show me the link to these pads you mention, as I have not heard of them and can't seem to find them on a google search. I thought stoptech's only pad was the "street performance" which is now the "sport" and they recently added a less aggressive "street".

edit: After searching only for "trackday pad" I see they are made by powerstop.
