Default new "gasgate" for Audi !!! not just dieselgate...

apparently Audi cheated on regular gas engine too, not just diesels....using the dyno / steering wheel angle trick..

America Figured Out A New Way Audi Cheated on Emissions Testing: Report

When the Audi starts up, its transmission engages a ‘low CO2' program, shifting gears in such a way as to keep engine revs and emissions artificially low. If the steering wheel is turned more than 15 degrees, the car deactivates the program and shifts in its normal, more pollutant fashion that burns more gas and produces more CO2.

Audi figured that the only time the car would run with the steering wheel never moving would be in a lab, on a test bed. This is a similar philosophy to the classic ‘dyno mode’ cheat that kicked off Dieselgate. It’s so simple, and apparently it was enough to get Audis to pass emissions tests in lab situations they might have never passed in real world conditions.

The cheat was only implemented on cars with an automatic transmission with an internal designation AL 551. This appears to be a particular variant of the eight-speed unit Audi sources from transmission supplier ZF, set up for Quattro models. It apparently covers several hundred thousand vehicles under the cheat, according to Bild am Sonntag’s reporting. Diesel engines and gasoline engines are both affected here, and models involved include the Audi A8, the Audi Q5 as Forbes notes, as well as the Audi Q7 if my Wikipedia digging is correct.

Oh jeebus. Maybe they would have been better off throwing themselves on their sword earlier.

One wonders how far up the chain of command this goes, and how that may have trickled down to their WEC efforts.

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.

I am guessing from now on, every time CARB does their test, they will be wiggling steering wheels back and forth ? but VW's Audi trick was looking at difference in speed between front and rear wheels, not sure how you catch that on a dyno.

I have long ago said that F.Piech could be easily named nazi with aspirations for a world dominance, in the auto industry for the time being.
Well, at least Bob Lutz agrees with me, here is a quote from his interview with C&D:

"C/D: Is it possible that Ferdinand Piëch might be responsible for VW’s Dieselgate?

BL: Yes. Employees have to be able to say to the CEO, “We figured it couldn’t be done, but we tried our best for you, and now we know it can’t be done.” But with Piëch, if you failed, it was, “Off with their heads.” People who fear losing their jobs start lying."

All that engineering prowess and the best they can do is cheat. Lame. I wouldn't want to be a VW shareholder now, or a dealer for Audi or VW.

Cheating? I'm not so sure this is any different than the tricks corporations use with financial engineering, credit default swaps, or any manipulation of an IRS gray area.

Well there is leveraging existing law to the maximum extent possible, but I don't think there is any grey area regarding flipping tunes on a car off vs. on a dyno.

not only I don't think this is a gray area. This is probably the worst kind of cheat there is. cheating on testing protocol, nothing worse than this imo.
