Default New Ford GT350 comes with HUD shift light

    This is pretty cool.

DEARBORN, Mich., July 23, 2015 – When driving the high-revving, 526-horsepower Shelby GT350® Mustang, drivers would do best to keep eyes on the road.

So that’s where Ford put the Performance Shift Light Indicator.

For decades, race drivers have used shift lights that signal the perfect engine speed for the shift point for maximum acceleration and lower lap times during the intensity of on-track driving.

Shift lights allow drivers to concentrate on the road in front of them rather than watching a tachometer. However, most shift lights either obscure the forward field of view or are located low in the instrument cluster where the driver must look down to see it.

The Performance Shift Light Indicator is a heads-up display located in front of the driver. It can be controlled through the driver information center in the gauge cluster, and customers can set shift points, light intensity, select from three different modes, or turn the feature off entirely.

In Tach mode, the amber LEDs light up sequentially from left to right as engine revs build to provide an easily viewable tachometer. Track mode is quite different – when engine revs build, LEDs light up from the outside ends to the center until the shift point is reached, then the whole LED bar flashes.

The third option is Drag mode. Much like Track mode, the customer sets the shift point, but in this configuration the entire LED light bar stays dark, then flashes repeatedly when the engine reaches the preset rpm threshold. “Given the conditions of a drag race, we found drivers wanted maximum simplicity in a performance shift light,” said Mike Makled, electrical engineer for Shelby programs.

Anyone know the relative shift accuracy of one's ear vs. a shift light?

If the Ford GT350R was sub $40k, i would seriously buy one.

    One of each please.

    Focus RS = Street/Daily Car
    GT350R = Weekend Car
    Ford GT = Race Car

2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 vs. 2016 Ford Focus RS | REVdata

Looks like the 2016 Ford Focus RS has a competitor. The 2017 Volkswagen Golf R400. 420hp AWD i4 Turbo. 6Speed. Hot Hatch, but $63k though. At that price, might as well buy the GT350R or a Corvette Stingray.

I would hazard a guess that your ear is not as accurate and nowhere near as consistent, but than again I do work with grinders and loud music all day long so YMMV.

stop with this 350R thing. you can't buy one. it is a unicorn......

this is like the GT4 thread.......you can't buy one. dealers are requiring you to buy a 918, then they will throw in a GT4 at MSRP.......

I guess that depends on a lot of things. For me, I can't always distinguish my engine over the other Miatas for the first few turns of a race. I rely on the shift lights then. Also, My tune for most tracks make good power right at the rev limiter so I gain the most track position by not shifting until the last moment and dropping down to a point higher on the powerband in the next gear. That means shifting just before the fuel cut. Again, shift lights help me do that with greater precision.

That is an excellent point. It is very hard to not bounce the rev limiter at the start as you cannot hear your motor at all. Staying off the limiter is a definite advantage. HUD would be a huge help in this case as usually you are too busy to be watching gauges and shift lights.

That is cool. I had a shift light in my Miata race car. Much simpler than the one in the new Mustang GT350, but when you have so many things to think about while racing, a big yellow light in your face telling you to shift up is very helpful.

Um....no? They will be readily available. Just not the 2015s.

In SuperMiata races. I shift according to Joe Xie's engine rpm. His car is so F*ing loud !! I can't hear my own engine.

When I first started wheel to wheel I did that a few times.

They should really allow for the light to come on at a different rpm in each gear, if it's supposed to be as simple as "see the light, shift". Need a little more warning in first than in 4th.

It's already a multi-staged shift light. If you can't time your shifts by hearing the engine, looking at the tach, and the HUD sequential bar shift lights, you have issues. Did you even watch the video?

Yep, and I'm still not wrong.

I'm sure a professional driver deals with all kinds of things that aren't quite right.
