Default NC miata vs. solstice/sky turbo???

alright guys, im considering selling my 97 miata late this year and getting either a NC miata, or a pontiac/saturn solstice/sky turbo. They goal for the car is DD/track fun setup like most of you guys are running with your S2k's....but i want something a bit different

ive gone over pros and cons in my head for each platform, and just decided bring up the matter on here to discuss it a bit and get more input and advice that i may have over looked and/or was not aware of, thanks guys

NC miata advantages i can think of...

    1. superior suspension geometry over the soltice/sky platform
    2. a motor im familiar with(mazda/ford duratec)
    3. lighter initial weight
    4. from what it looks like, stronger chassis tuning/handling aftermarket support.
    5. its a miata

solstice/sky turbo advantages i can think of...

    1. more powerful, OEM turbo motor, and more power can be made easier
    2. from what im told/researched, can fit larger wheel/tire combos then NC
    3. less common on track which is appealing to me since i kinda like having odd ball cars
    4. exterior appeal, more so the sky, the solstice i dont think looks as good as the sky, but i wont let that stop me if i find a deal on a turbo solstice, but man i really like how the Sky looks
    5. still a decent chassis tuning/suspension aftermarket.

let me know what you guys think...even though i think i might already know how most of you guys feel on the matter

    lol Saturn.

I'd do the Solstice if you really wanna be a bad@ss, I hear they handle pretty darn well for what they are.

I haven't driven the Pontiac or Saturn, but owned an NC. With Eibach Springs and Sways, Koni Yellows, 245/16 RA-1s, an intake and an exhaust, and bone stock everything else, I was able to get 1:29 at Streets and consistent 1:30s. And I'm just a hobby driver, others could get it quicker I'm sure.
The car NEVER ran hot (even in summer months), brakes never faded, oil was always clean, etc. etc. It was a mighty mite. Full interior with a roll bar so it was comfy on 500 mile trips, and you could just drive from the street onto the track and go (no swapping brake pads, setting up this or that).

If I didn't get such a killer deal on the Nissan which included getting rid of my bike, I'd still have it.

Parts are cheap and easy to come by and the car will be around for a long, long time, so online shopping for performance mods should be better than the other two.

    So I say Miata. That's my .02!

I sometimes refer to that year's national results in SCCA autocross, but that information is from autocross. things are weighted differently, like transitions, car width.. but we all know that. No doubt a starting point though.

After owning a NC for a while, I gotta say the NC. It's quite a capable car, even with very minor mods. It wont be the same as your NA, but it's still quite fun.

I haven't driven a solstice/sky but from what I remember it's even more of a commuter car than the NC. And the NC felt like a camry compared to a NA.

I think the Sky looks great but I would worry about track use reliability. The only time I've seen these cars at the track was when I was shooting Setup. You're used to turbo issues so maybe that doesn't scare you.
The NC has a better soft top and better visibility.
Have you seen either of Brian Goodwin's cars?

Saturn Sky = Opel GT, you could look around for some Opel parts. or you could stuff a LS2 in it and burn the tires off of it. I always thought of it as the "Baby Vette" Also they only made 7519 of them so getting custom part is going to be hard, but it may be a collectors car one day.

^damn your right, just looked up some pics, the solstice doesnt have much room and the sky even less...gunna be kinda hard to fit the tool box, jack, jackstands, impact, helmet, hans etc that i already fit in my NA for track days :/

Maybe WIlliam or someone better suited can answer my question.

What are the inherent advantages/disadvantages of the NC to the NA?

I hear the NC is a lot more expensive on parts/wear and tear, etc. Close to the rx-8 in price. is this true? (Probably why we don't see too many im guessing)

not to mention they're not that light

From what I understand its just a better and faster car, but feels mushy out of the factory. And its new, so the major advantage of the NA miata being really cheap and parts being readily available are gone.

the mods i have planned for the NC if i got it would be simple, a good coilover, 17x9's, 245/40 on every corner, bolt ons, and maybe a OSG diff if i can swing it. Just so its handling is more then capable on track, the power is a little more then stock, and so it looks good

    I was kidding about NC/NA.

but Solstice trunk is a joke. see image:

NC really is pretty fast. there is quite a bit of knowledge base already. NC would of been a good choice.

The NC is more than capable enough. My NC with eibach springs, stock shocks, and oem rx8 sway bars did a 2:12 at BW at MC #1. And I suck at driving.

    Clint:

seriously, just give in and get a S2K. It really is a better car than both. you get a ton of competition. last S2K Challenge had over 30 cars. and there are a ton of GOOD S2K drivers for you to run against with.
