    Default Mx5 engine

    For all you Miata guys.
How much is a crate engine for 2000 Mx5?
Also where do you get them?
    Thanks

The NB crate motors have not been available for some time. The NA1 and NA2 motors are no longer available from Mazda as of a month or so ago.

Build one your self or have someone else do it for you. If you don't need/want SM level prep it is not that expensive.

Junkyard, ebay. We offer blueprinted motors with heavy duty internals, just a bit more than Mazda crate motors but about 3x what a junkyard motor costs.

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.
But obviously I just dont get it. -fatbillybob

That must mean I got one of the last NA8 engines. I got it in early December.

I swapped in a 01+ VVT motor instead - keep the 99/00 electronics and just add a VVT tuner. The engines will have lower miles from the junkyard and usually are more plentiful since they were available for more years.

VVTuner does not interfere with OBD readings, so it technically could still pass smog/inspection.

There's a member here who has a 99 with a VVT engine and it passed smog being controlled by the stock ecu. It does suck how difficult it is to find good BP4Ws. Moti had one for sale for quite awhile, don't know if it ever sold.

BTW, what's wrong with the engine in your '00? How did it fail?

I did two of these swaps already and got them both to "pass". Did I see a referee and get an actual label? No. I just showed up to a regular smog shop and asked for a smog.

Had a water leak and overheated the engine. Lost compression.
    Now it does not start.

You probably have a blown head gasket and possibly a warped head. You could probably rebuild it depending on what you want from it.

Yeap my thoughts too, pray that the block is still ok.
It will be for daily use only, no track duty.

Edmund, bring it to me, one of our racers that lives by me is an ASE certified mechanic. He can work on it at my place. He did my daughters motor after she blew the head gasket (VW 1.8T) and it runs like a top.

PM me offline if you want to.
