155 bhp; 148 lb./ft. -- they will have to deliver them to the Mazda dealerships on the backs of donkeys . . .

0-60 comes in less than 6 seconds according to most magazines, and the ND also beat the FRS / BRZ in every performance test that they ran them against each other.
The car is much faster than the power numbers suggest.

Is there a regulatory advantage in listing the hp/torks low? Either here or elsewhere?

Mazda has screwed the pooch by listing it too high at least twice in the past. They might be covering for last minute tunes for emissions.

These days, no. Back in the muscle car/Nader era, mfrs under rated bhp to make the cars easier to insure. Mazda had trouble getting the 2001 Miata to meet emissions standards while making the power they advertised. The production car ended up being well short of advertised bhp. I believe there was some legal hullabaloo, owners getting compensation, specs revised etc. So I doubt Mazda, will under or over rate the bhp.

It's also almost as fast as a stock US E36 M3, which I guess is now also a slow car

Mazda makes fine quality, good handling, under-powered little cars. This new Miata is no exception . . .

Our Odyssey sounds terrible when it starts in the morning I don't know if it's lifter noise or what but it does sound good when you get on it - Vtec yo.

This might be the nicest thing you've said about a Miata since you decided to sell yours many years ago.

I got a ride as a passenger in a pre-production car a few weeks ago. Here's what I posted on the SuperMiata facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SuperMiata

Got a chance to ride (passenger) in a Club Edition ND (2016 MX5) today. Driver was an expert on one of our key suspension testing roads near the shop. Succinctly, the car feels like an NA with a built NB2 engine and 6 speed. This is all the grab by the scruff of the neck driving dynamics of the NA6 with whatever NVH improvements can be had 25 years later. The car has serious grunt down low. Unlike the NC which sorta died on top and the NA8 and NB2 which had good midrange but weak top end, the ND motor pulls eagerly with a very flat torque curve, just slightly softening in the last few hundred RPM. I'm told that's the OEM fuel cut strategy to save the cat, as opposed to an abrupt fuel cut that heats the cat. Flywheel felt really light. I don't know the weight but it felt nearly like an aftermarket flywheel, it revved so fast.
Car rotates around your chest, just like the NA, not your knees, like the NC. The drop throttle behavior is delicious, tucking the nose in, shifting weight forward and increasing yaw rate in a superbly progressive manner. The road we ran on is low to mid speed, lots of tight turns, very undulating and full of patches, lumps and mid turn bumps. The Bilsteins handled everything with aplomb, only when flat hammered through a transition and full bump did you feel it settle on the bump stops and gently, controllably rebound quickly. This all with a 180b driver and passenger. The car, like the NA, is intuitive and predictable right up to and past its limits.
The guy driving was using his fingertips, small steering angles, just an occasional correction. All the fun work was done with the pedals, as god intended. On a tight back road, this thing will destroy just about anything under about $150k on OEM tires.
    The go kart is back
I'm so eager to get ours and start hoon.. er, R&D projects with it.

Nice assessment. I had no doubts Mazda would nail the sensations of driving once the weight figures were released. To say something feels like an NA Miata is quite the compliment.
