I'm not so sure, they have been hinting at something big in that department. Might just be a manually retractable hardtop though.

Is club supposed to appeal to track guys? Well if that is true they failed! Someone please tell Mazda that "MAZDA CONNECTTM with a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system and commander control knob and an AM/FM/HD/SiriusXM® satellite radio with a nine-speaker BOSE® audio system with headrest speakers " does not belong in any track car.
I would rather have 20 less pounds and $1000 lower price.

You know, the irony of this is not lost on me. Me griping about too many luxury items on the C7Z and no "Club Sport" trim option.

Yah, I'm a little torn. I don't want all the digital crap on the dash but I do want the Bilsteins, Brembos and LSD. More to benchmark for development of new bits. Thinking now, base trim for our project car and just borrow customer cars to dyno the Bilsteins, drive the LSD etc.

First order of business will be getting a parts fiche to see if the diff housing is compatible with any existing OS Giken, then Xidas.

Factory options usually end up being much cheaper on ebay. You can have your bilsteins and brembos if you REALLY want them.

Brembos? On a stock miata? Seriously? Back in my day...

Don't get me started with GM! Clubsport Z06 would start with NO SUPERCHARGER.

Well, seeing how it's Porsche, they probably have to redesign every interior plastic, the suspension, wheel hubs, alternator, chassis, body panels, tires, brakes, exhaust, intake, ecu, cooling, heating, seats, visors, steering wheel, interior lights, carpet, floor mats, shifter, engine, transmission, and redo crash testing in order to delete the radio. Cuz it's the Porsche way. Or something.

Pretty weak considering modern aero, freakishly light weight, absurdly tall gearing, 6500rpm redline and a cutting edge efficient gas engine. Any halfway decent running NA6 will post those numbers with 80's tech.

In short, nothing has changed. Mazda is a driving dynamics company. The only company that does this better across their entire product line is Porsche and maybe Ferrari. We all hoped the drivetrain would be a little closer to the chassis in terms of engineering relevance. Just as the NA6 used a recycled econobox engine that was already several years old, the ND gets something already in the parts bin. No matter, by all accounts the car is brilliant to drive and I want one. I'll just be tinkering under the hood forthwith.

From what I've seen/read, the Skyactiv cars seem to outperform their ratings. Hopefully that will be true in this case as well.

Is Mazda unable to make motors?

Here we have a state-of-the-art 2.0 with direct injection and a freakishly high compression ratio. And, it only makes 155hp and receives 30 mpg average? That's early 90's tier awfulness.

Mazda SkyActiv G motors are some of most efficient gas engines on the planet in that displacement category, they're just not real powerful. That's the price for not having hybrid tech I guess. Remember Mazda has been on the ropes a few times in the last 5 years, not far away from puling out of the US market. The 3 and 6 saved them to some extent. The ND was an an expensive project for what will no doubt be a relatively low volume car. Kudos for them sticking with their driving dynamics ethos and making a real sports car. The all new 1.5L every other country gets appears to be a gem. Money just wasn't there for a USDM specific variant of the existing 2.0L engine. We can hope that the car will do really well here and maybe free up the purse strings to develop an MX5 specific variant the of 3's 2.0L.

But yeah, the FRS 2.0L is rated at 200hp, lugs around another 500 lbs and is rated 25 city/ 34 hwy

It seems to me that the power to economy of modern motors is worse that it was a decade ago.

Take the pitiful 1.8l 1zz motor Toyota put in my MRS. It's a 90's economy motor utilizing multi-point fuel injection and variable valve timing on the intake side only. It runs on regular octane. It makes 138hp choked by 3 catalytic converters, and propels a 2,185lb car with the drag coefficient of a boulder at an average of 30mpg. That's just about on par with Mazda's fancy new 2.0 direct injection motor, pushing a similarly weighted car, with a lower coefficient of drag.

The 2.0 in the FRS is also a poor motor. 2.0l with direct injection making 198hp.
Toyota is awful at making NA performance motors, and yet the 2zz, with a yamaha designed head, makes 190hp with 1.8l and multi-point injection. The motor is about 15 years old now.

Lets not even talk about the magic Honda can do with motors using similar displacement.

I'm not at all impressed with the new crop of direct injection motors. This technology was supposed to be a huge advancement.
