    Default muffler on a dyno

Saturday, Kraftwerks (Oscar Jackson) hosted a free dyno day for all Miatas.

Savinton's turbo Miata dynoed at ~267whp.
Trackdayhookey's Rotrex Miata dynoed at ~275whp.

note Kraftwerks' dyno read ~8% lower than Church's dyno.

Emilio brought his rental NB Miata. without muffler and cat, it reads 119.9whp. he then slipped on a Racing Beat muffler on there. so we all stand around and placing bet how much whp the muffler will affect. Emilio predicted a loss of 6whp, some predicted loss of 2 or 4 whp. I predicted PLUS 3whp.. guess who won ?

    ..............................

dyno with muffler on was 122whp

Give yourself 25 points in the F1 competition for that guess!

The 119hp, was it just straight pipe all the way down to the end of the car or was it right out of the header and no pipe after that?

Those Miata can put out some really good number and seem to be very reliable at the track.

And I was about to ditch my muffler in favor of dump pipe. I guess I won't now.
I thought that car had ~145hp or is that the rating at the crank? Or did it get a new engine?

119whp was with pipe ending at rear axle. Racing beat muffler goes on after that.

More than 20 Miatas were dynoed. 122whp is about right and was on the high side for stock engine with I/H/E. Remember their dyno reads low.

I thought that engine had some head work and was on an 01+ block plus the I/H/E. It's advertised as having 150 whp, that's why I asked. That sounds pretty good for a stock engine.

Wrong car. It was the NB rental, not the OGK

The Kraftwerks dyno produces the most accurate number of any I have worked with, albeit my dyno tuning experience is modest. The 150whp number is an estimate for the rental once we get the BP5A cam, cam gears and AEM installed. That stuff isn't in yet. Still, I was expecting to see closer to 130-135, not the 122 we got. It'll be interesting to see what it makes when the stuff gets added.

Sheds new light on the 1:54.9 at Infineon last week. Grip is more important than power there I think.

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.

    Emilio,
Who makes the 2.5 inch race midpipe on the NB?
This info makes me wonder if the Springfield dyno might really be the best option for a mild N/A motor.

    Good-Win-Racing has a 2.5" midpipe, but integrates a cat.
The racing beat one is 2.375" no cat.

Eric: this dyno test shows a little backpressure is a good thing. Springfielddyno has a bit of a choke down at header exit, I believe that's what it is for. SD is just too loud but I believe it makes most power for stock Miata with I/h/e

do you still have yours lying around looking for a home? I can live with the noise and am well aware of needing earplugs.
I have RB header and Goodwin the rest of the way back now and it's pretty good but I'd like to lose some of the weight without losing power.

Mine was custom built for me by Jason at Enthuza. Nothing special, just a 2.5" straight pipe with the OEM flange location at rear.

Ok, looks like it is an eddy current design similiar to the Mustang.
