Interesting. This should really wake the car up.

And if they paint the cars with some actual colors. Subaru and Honda are using more interesting colors on their appliance cars.

Agreed with the two gentlemen above me, trans issues need to be solved and the shades of Gray palette needs a refresh.. There are more exciting colors in the washer / dryer department at Home Depot.

Contacts at Mazda indicated the colors chosen were and attempt to move the ND upmarket. Restrained luxury metallic colors. It didn't work. While some non-enthusiast buyers liked those colors and bought cars, the folks that actually wanted one, hated the colors.
Why Mazda didn't replace two of the three (!) neutral/white colors with a simple classic red or modern take on the smurf blue is baffling. How many more ND's would they have sold if they did a little ad campaign showing a bright red ND Club flying around a heavily photshopped Chuckwalla at sunset with a helmeted driver.
Mazda totally ignored the massive racing legacy of the Miata brand and went for the same customer that considers a CT200H or Veloster as a "sporty" car.

Lower the damn thing 15mm, mount something other than a pinner thin LRR tire, a bit more blackout trim and a bright playful color. Market it as the hardcore sportscar it is. The added power would just be a bonus.

A modern take on Smurf blue would have me digging in the sofa cushions and seriously considering buying one. I think the NDs look nice but but in my mind none of the colors have that "gotta have it" affect. I imagine a Smurf-ish blue ND in the garage next to my Smurf NA.

And is it really that difficult to either offer a slightly lower and stiffer suspension package either as an option or standard on the Club trim? Even the old men on Miata.net ask for it too.

The CMF team has really dropped the ball on the ND (Color, Material, Finish). It aggravates me when I see their advertisements about their craftsmanship on the design of their cars, but they leave this design staid and unimaginative. The interior begs for better colors to accentuate the cabin, too.

Upscale colors? Upscale from what? There isn't a glut of roadster models being produced in this price range. Their color palette is simply dour. (I do like the pearl white a bit, however.)

Sorry for the backdrops, boyracer wheels, but I did these color samples for fun back in '16:

    (LE version)

    (Sunburst metallic)

    (Laguna blue/saddle interior)

    (Mariner blue)

(The green Mazda put on the 2...can't recall the name)

I did others, but those were the ones I could find readily.

I'm not sure if anything can be done to salvage the appearance of the ND, but some lively colors would go a long way. The ND just leaves me scratching my head. It's got it where it counts, but some mistakes were made. Something is going on at Mazda HQ.

That green was used on the '12 special edition NC in the UK and possibly other parts of Europe along with the red and white SEs that we had in the US.

Oooh, I like the spoiler and painted cage. The color choice is pretty great.

I am wondering, are the fender heights the result of safety regulations? European or American? Why do some modern cars appear to have lower fenders, such as the Corvette, Porsche, and various flavors of super cars? I thought there was a standard.

The euros care a lot more about pedestrian safety IIRC.

Bright colors would be better for pedestrian safety. More likely to see the car coming at you at speed!

I would like to think Mazda would analyze the entire package prior to just throwing horsepower at the car. They have had a pretty good test environment (crash test dummies?) with the cars in the MX5 cup series. There have been some transmission and motor mount upgrades for the cup cars for example. Hopefully they take a comprehensive approach when increasing the performance envelope of the car and address the entire system and not just the motor. This includes that guy who does the voice over for all the Mazda commercials. That guy pretty much killed any desire for an ND for me.

    Loving that green btw.
