I read that yesterday, too. The original Miata had a one-off coupe version, which Mazda trots out from time to time. I thought it was spectacular and would prefer it over a convertible.

Maybe a new usable hatchback version will let it compete for Cayman and Z4 buyers.

I like it. I would rather have a hardtop coupe that a convertible.

This shot's a bit soft, but it shows the profile nicely. Great looking car and it's the Sheriff's favorite color!

Nerd alert: Mazda sold 179 NB Coupes in '03. Japan-only, IIRC.

Especially considering they engineered and tooled up enough to make 179 NBs. Seems awfully silly to make so few, I'm sure they could have sold more. If nothing else, they should have offered it as the Club Sport in 2003.

Mazda is the world champion for dropping that ball.
The 25th anniversary of the Miata also stands for 25 years of dropping the ball and not making a tin top version.

We can all ***** about something about the makers of our favorite cars.....

Overall I must rate Mazda #1 for support of club level auto racing. They have remained strong supporters even when their financials have not looked so good. GM, Honda and a bunch of others disappeared in a flash when the recession hit.

I would venture a guess US crash regs and mass production? I would venture those coupes were mostly hand-built.

Good point, Oli. The Mazda folks I met were always really happy to be a part of the loyal ownership, racers or otherwise.

Racecars are a different story but if it's a street or track car, I would choose a convertible over a coupe all day long.

Part of the Miata's appeal to me when first buying a street car was getting into a fun convertible for cheap. Don't really care if the coupe could have been more rigid or slightly lighter, want the feel of a convertible hands down. Especially out here in SoCal where it's 75F year round :P

Kinda' makes sense that a coupe design is coming out. They must have "seen the light" with the success of the BRZ/FRS. Something tells me they'll undercut the price of the Toyota as the price of the RX-7 will definitely see a premium over any future Toyota derivative.

Geez, lighten up gents... do I really need to start explaining what I think about Mazda's racers support program and whether I like Miatas or not?!
    Sheesh..

What I meant by Mazda dropping the ball is that in all these years that the Miata has been in production Mazda had all the know-how and most of the tooling to make a tin top Miata or Miata based car and just didn't.
As many Miatas as Mazda sold, there was always a market for a small cheap RWD coupe out there, a niche that has been vacant for a while... they could have sold more cars by using everything they already had from the Miata.

I don't buy your apology. I think your are a self-loathing Miata driving hair stylist with deep rooted confusion, ambiguity and resentment about your gender preference. It comes out as a hostility toward Mazda. What did they ever do to you?

BTW, I don't believe Mazda plans to make a fixed roof Miata. The next retractable hard top will have a more sloping roof than the current similar to the current Z4.

We have an SCCA racer who is a dedicated Honda racer, works for Honda and sponsored by Honda. We need to find a connected Mazda racer with the ear of Mazda management and shower that guy with petitions for a miata sport coupe stripped down club racer model just barely legal to drive to and from the track, no frills, crank windows, A/C optional.
