Default Mazda Delays Diesel for US . . . Again

I guess Mazda is having a hard time with their street diesels, it's a good thing they have efficient gas engines.

MAZDA TO DELAY SKYACTIV-D CLEAN DIESEL LAUNCH IN NORTH AMERICA
    Jan 9, 2014

IRVINE, Calif., Jan. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda North American Operations today announced that the launch of its SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine in North America is being further delayed from its Spring 2014 announced debut timing.

While Mazda understands its SKYACTIV-D can meet emission regulation requirements without the use of a NOx after-treatment system, it was decided that further development is required to deliver the right balance between fuel economy and Mazda-appropriate driving performance.

Further information on the program, including a timeline of launch for North America, technical specifications and fuel economy will be available at a later date, closer to launch.

Mazda North American Operations is headquartered in Irvine, Calif., and oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States and Mexico through more than 700 dealers. Operations in Mexico are managed by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

That sucks! I was hoping it would be ready soon and wanted to give one a try as our Volt lease is up in a month.

I kinda like the 3 hatchback and it's supposed to have better gadgets than the 6 currently has. Even in gas trim, both the 3 and 6 get pretty good mileage.

I have my eye on a CX-5 diesel as a daily and Miata-on-open-trailer tow vehicle

    SuperMiata

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.
But obviously I just dont get it. -fatbillybob

I really think Mazda should introduce the diesel, if we ever get it, in the CX-5 rather than the 6. I think the diesel will make a bigger difference in mileage on on the CX-5 than either the 6 or 3.

Even in gas trim, they're all 35 mpg or better.

I would give Honda Accord Hybrid a try instead of diesel anything.

2014 Honda Accord Hybrid vs. 2013 Volkswagen Passat TDI on Edmunds.com

    1. Diesel cost 10%+ more than 87
    2. Accord gets much better city mpg than Passat TDI
    3. Accord gets better hwy mpg than Passat TDI
    4. Accord is quite a bit faster in 1/4 mile and 0-60 than Passat TDI
    5. Accord is well a Honda (don't mean much in the last 10 years, but the new Accord is significantly better than last 3 gen of Accord).

I recently purchased a 2014 Mazda 3s Touring and really like it so far. Has enough tech gadgetry to keep my happy (bluetooth, integrated streaming Pandora etc.) and drives like something an enthusiast could enjoy. The 3s 2.5L is only available with an automatic which was the wife's preference anyway but they should have the 6 speed manual out soon (the auto is really good anyway). Great room inside for a small hatchback and the interior is very improved over previous generations. Basically it is a great car for not much money.

I didn't know about the Accord hybrid, sounds like a decent car. I would buy that over a Passat diesel for sure. I still like the Mazdas a lot.

Edit: I just saw that the Accord comes with a CVT, I haven't driven one of those that I like yet.
