Default Maxxis SuperMiata Chuckwalla Race Report 3/19/17 - "HOLD MY BEER"

    "HOLD MY BEER"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 19, 2017

Maxxis SuperMiata Race - 4 SuperSprint racess at Chuckwalla Raceway
    Weather: Freaking hot

Pomona, Calif. — This past weekend at Churckawalla, drivers William Chen again proved how dominant the team can be. William's new S3 racer crossed the finish line in 1st place all 4 races due to mad skills. S2 was dominated by Emilio Cervantes, obviously gotten lucky again.

Standard SuperMiata SuperSprint format for this weekend:
Qualifying set the grid for race 1. We then reverse grid (the whole field) in race 2, again in race 3 and race 4. Idea is if you are new to racing, you are very likely to start on pole your first weekend !!! Which racing series can say that !!!

It was a long ass drive up to Chuckwalla from Los Angeles Friday evening, traffic turned a 3 hour drive into 4.5 hour drive. Andrew kidd of Trackspeed Racing drove 11 hours to be exact from NORCAL. Just to show up in the new class S1 turbocharged 10,000whp Miata) and shake down. Drive back from Chuckwalla for me was worse, a 5 hour drive !!

Friday was St. Paddy's day. So the famed SuperMiata BBQ kicked off with a bonfire pre-party Friday evening. Lesson learned is to never EVER let Dennis Uebersetzig start a fire. After a few failed attempt, smart ass brought over a 5 gallon fuel jug and poured some fuel into fire pit and some more on the ground, gave the jug to Adam Gershon. Then said "HOLD MY BEER" !!! Ohoh, bunch of us backed away 20 feet except for idiot Adam. Dennis pulled out a match and boom, 6 feet high flame, blinding all vision. But William Chen bravely ran over and removed the 5 gallon jug from Adam, now stunned, thus saving Adam's life. Result was both Adam and Dennis now have no hair on their bottom half of their legs.

To ease the pain, they decided more beer would be a great idea.........

    Saturday:

    Rookie's report

Rookie Hanno - showed up with a rental Enterprise 1/2 ton truck (has built in brake controller !!! didn't know you can rent them that's equipped for tow) towing a single axle trailer !!! Talking about unsafe !! He layed down a fast 2:06s Saturday morning. But when qualifying comes, he lost his purse and was too tired to qualify and race !!

Jason Cappelli also a w2w rookie. He came from heavily modded Time Attack GTR , so he had no concept of driving the car. Kept wondering why Miata don't turn and brake by themselves. Brought over a S1 and a S2 car. Ran S1 car on Saturday, but got bored because of the car's tendency to overheat !! who would of guessed, turbo Miata and 100F weather !! Funny thing is Jason was arguing for 300whp power cap instead of 220whp Friday evening.........damn GTR drivers thinking power fixes everything.

Joe Yau brought a sub 120whp to a 140whp fight. so despite the mad skill, he was no match. His car unfortunately broke Saturday. But Joe got teched, check rided, so it isn't that bad of a weekend.

John Carson - coming in we knew he is gonna be fast. He likes to post dance video on Facebook (not making this up), so we knew he is gonna be unstable...... So we kept a very close eye on him. Passed the check ride easily. unfortunately his car broke before the race, so can't tell if he gonna be start dancing at podium....

David Marinez - fast off the bat, had a great race on Saturday. But mechanical issues prevented him from racing on Sunday. Passed check ride with flying color !!

    --------------

Sonny Wata***** (don't make me type it out, you can pronounce it anyway) drove his S2 Miata to a low 2:04s, beating out Emilio 2/10th for pole position !! Pretty impressive given that Sonny's comp weight was 100LB more than all S2. SuperMiata has an unspoken rule that points leader must carry a 100LB ballast !! Plus the times were done in 97F weather !!! During this qualifying, he dropped 2 wheels off at T2, riding the curb right down the middle. The farming cracked the header......

Hanno offered Sonny his ride for Sonny to race in (what a nice guy), but that would mean Sonny need to start at the back of the field. Sonny REALLY want the win, only option was for Hanno to donate his header. with 45 minutes to go before the race. Austin Cabot (yes, that famous dude with an ambulance and podcast), Hanno, Lawrence, Manny all joined in so

Sonny can start on P1. With just 15 minutes to go before the race. The team finished removing broken header from Sonny's car, stole the good header from Hanno's car and installed it in Sonny's car. For this, the team (who helped) got the Hard Charger award for Saturday.

    -------------

Best team in Maxxis SuperMiata is Team Pimp. Team owner / driver - William signed up for the new for 2017 S3 class (basically a 1.6SM with Maxxis tires and 110whp cap). Plan was to dominate all 3 classes. S1 cars will overheat in this weather. S2 drivers are no match for William. S3 cars are just too slow.

“You have to practice like you compete,” said team owner, William Chen, to its team driver. He then sent out team driver William in Pimp (S3 car name), was immediately blazing fast, setting pace of 2:10s (2:09.2 next day). William, through his years of experiences, recalls the time he ran Riverside International Raceway 30 years ago. many mid speed corners later, He managed best ever S3 class record (okay, there were a total of 3 S3 and this was first ever S3 weekend at CVR, but that doens't mean that aint the best Miata lap ever). William patted himself on the back and retired into compound for a car wash on Pimp. Making sure clean surface for those coveted "winner" sticker coming later.

    --------------------------

    1st supersprint race:

First race starts at 4:40pm. Endurance race driver extraordinaire William Chen, relying on his vast racing experience, knew that the ideal time to relieve himself was 10 minutes before the race. This strategy clearly contributed to the team's incredible finish, as well as minimizing the weight of their spectacular racing machine. Race was a standing start. Speedventures wanted to try a new starting flagging sequence (yellow flag up till all came to a stop, drop

yellow, green comes up, all due to some ex-motorcycle racer's suggestion). Guess what: We are all trained to move on starter's slightest twitch. Yellow came down, Jason, Sonny and Howard took off. Green flag flew a second after, William got a great jump, passing several cars as he dropped the hammer hard, and slipped through along the far inside of the track. Then reality sinks in, he realizes his 110whp was no match for those 140whp cars. By T3, he got passed by all the S2 cars. But does William give up ? no. William hit the gas pedal harder (stepping down harder on throttle usually helps). Drove deep into T4, and went 4 wheels off. Blaming surface condition from those that passed him earlier (must be Sonny dropping all those header fluid), he brought dirt and rock back onto the surface.
Unfortunately his skill couldn't overcome the power deficiency (yes that's what I am sticking to, it sure isn't his mad skill !! ). Lawrence in the other S3 car, seeing his only competitor (William) gone off. Started high five himself. Lost control and went off at next corner. William passed Lawrence for S3 victory !!!

In the mean time, the whole field fought hard. As many competitors’ lap times started to get slower, William did a great job of keeping the Miata on boil. The tires were doing well, and weren’t giving up much speed. By 4th lap, it was obvious he wasn't going to catch the those damn S2 cars. The car remained bulletproof and William kept his composure and came home with a S3 win. S2 cars had a ton more fights, there were 10+ S2. But since the whole field was in front, so William didn't see crap. Chequered flag fell. Finishing order for S2 was Emilio, Sonny and Dennis.

    ------------------------------------------------

    2nd supersprint race:

SuperMiata's thing is to do a reverse grid of first race. Immediately after first race's chequered flag fell, all sped to back straight and do a hop thing and restart. This time, no cheating as green flag fell. Because of reverse grid, it was a lot more fun (1st race is always boring because you start where you qualify). A ton of action. finishing order for S2 was Emilio, Sonny and Kyle. Kyle is a noob (started racing mid 2016), not even old enough to have beer (he is 18 or 19) in his podium beer mug. Yet he has won 2 Supersprint SPM races already....

    ---------------------------------------------------

    Saturday BBQ

Weather was perfect !! no wind, 70F weather, no clouds, billions of stars in California desert !!

Maxxis SuperMiata BBQ is renowned for its food and beer (no crappy lite beer, Bud, Miller, Coors allowed). Chef Andrew Wong (a real chef in a fancy restaurant) came out and cook some fancy Spanish stew. about 25 people ate food, drink beer and watch video on big screen TV. We made fun of everyone's video, we tell noobs that's for his/her own good. Those noobs sure are suckers !!

Saturday evening ended with Austin Cabot of Slipangle recording a live podcast with 949racing crews. Please go to 949 Racing / Maxxis SuperMiata Cup BBQ from Chuckwalla - LIVE | chuckwalla, racing, snoopy, miata | SlipAngle by tracktuned.com Podcast to hear it.

    -----------------------------

    Sunday:

Emilio put on a set of sticker Maxxis RC1 tires, and set a blazing 2:01.5 during practice session. He was then forbid to use those tires for the race.

Hanno caught a small fire (yes, fire) with his cigarette lighter (apparently you can run hair dryer on lighter socket). Burned up a part of his dash pretty bad, got messy due to all those came to rescue with a fire extinguisher.

S1: Andrew Kidd of Trackspeed Engineering showed up in his S1 car, with no one to race with (Jason's S1 was running well). He treated the whole weekend as a test day.

Sonny was too lazy to drive the 6 hour round trip to fetch another header. So he swapped header with Hanno so he (Hanno) can race. Hanno decided to put away his purse and come race on Sunday.

    --------------------------------

    SuperSprint Race 3

Race 3 is again reverse grid of race 2. This time we had new driver Nick in S3. Jason decided to switch from S1 car to S2 car (yes, he brought 2 race cars !!! not all Miata drivers are poor). Race started without a hiccup. Emilio again won. Adam 2nd and Alan in 3rd.

Alan's SPM adventure is a good story. He started racing in 2014/15. His first year was mostly of last place finishes. With all the coaching we do in SuperMiata (we really do), he graudally moved to mid pack in 2016. In 2017, he clinched 2 podium finishes in 2 weekend. I predict a few win in 2017 !!!

Jason did great in S2, he had the pace to mingle with the midpack. Finish 7th. He said he had a lot more fun in S2 than S1. Surprising coming from a 10,000hp GTR Time Attack driver.

Hanno in his first ever came in 5th starting from back of the field !!! He sure can drive when he isn't dying from heat exhaustion. This earned him Hardcharger award on Sunday

    -----------------------------------------------
    SuperSprint Race 4
again reverse grid of race 3. Exciting races, a ton of w2w actions. William being a dick, started blocking Erin, Howard and Albert in S2. Though William didn't beat them, he messed up their race, teaching them how real club racing is done - racing out of class is the norm. It was Emilio, Adam and Dennis for the podium.

    ---------------------------------------------------------
    Conclusion:

“racing requires that every member of the team be strong,” said winning S3 team owner and driver, William Chen. “If the pit crews would of performed, we would of easily beat the S2 cars" (not that it would of happened, but this is my article). The team now prepared for the fourth round of the SuperMiata series, at Big Willow in 2 weeks and plan to dominate all classes.

A huge congratulations to the entire William Chen racing team. Such a well-oiled machine working in unison, almost like a single organism. Until they start arguing with each other.

    Literally crying.

Dennis' Wall of Flame was so mesmorizing, so magnificent that I couldn't look away even if it meant certain death.

Great weekend even it was freaking hot. And I almost died. Would do again.

360 video of race 1 and race 2. Race 1 kinda boring. watch Race 2, it starts at 13:30 - I am in the slower S3 car (110whp) vs a bunch of S2 (140whp) cars swarming around me.

** best watch on phone's mobile youtube app ** you can pan around, it is like you sitting on top of my car's roof.
