    RIP Allan Simonsen.
LE MANS: Simonsen Killed In Early Race Accident

    HUUGE shunt into the wall.

What I think happened. He lifted as he was loaded on the left side exiting the turn as he saw the yellow flags, slowed cars and smoke. Didn't have to be a huge lift, but a lift. Rear end came out and he over corrected and shot to his left. He had no control after that. The whole cabin/roof/chassis looked tweaked pretty good and compromised. It is said he died from injuries sustained when something outside (barrier?) penetrated the cabin and either it struck him or he made contact with it. Either way, HUUUGE shunt and my condolences to his family and friends. Sucks all around for everyone. RIP I hate news like this.

Got loose on the painted curb. Didn't "over" correct. "Normal" corrected, but when the grip changed as the rears hit the asphalt again, it just shot him to the left.

At 90-100 mph, could have been any of us.

    RIP.

Aston has handled it well. Wish I could afford a DBS.

Yes looked like the painted curb from the view I saw too. I read somewhere that his death was caused by an object coming into the car. Barrier maybe.

    RIP.

That would be telling... when i first heard and saw the pic of the car it didn't look TOO bad for a prepped race car.. i figured it must have been a 45 degree 'earnhardt' thing.

Allan Simonsen. Although we do not know the actual cause of death of Alan Simonson at yesterday’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, reports are that he was conscious and talking when rescue workers first tended to him, only to have him become unconscious a few moments later, to be pronounced dead a short time later. He was driving in one of the most modern sedan-type cars (not open-cockpit) and his factory sponsored Aston Martin had every possible modern piece of safety equipment. There was no evidence of penetrating injuries, and no evidence of blunt force trauma. Thus the likely cause of this terrible tragedy is almost certainly to be related to a sudden deceleration injury, either to the brain, or to the aorta.

Wow that car really rebounded. Looks like the french are going to need to add some modern safety equipment to the track.

One wonders why there was no tire barrier. From what I saw in the live coverage, the Armco was right up against a big tree and that's where the impact was. Car just stopped, no energy reduction from the barrier.

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.

Yep. Tires aren't the best since they can "grab" the car, but it beats the hell out of tree backed armco. It was strange that there was nothing since that area is in the vicinity of an impact zone.

^^ The amateur footage shows a few cars having similar issues in that section of track.

That's a really good link. Kinda obvious if you think about it, but a good thing to keep in mind for your safety program.
