    Default Kendrick Extrication Device

Saw this in the Porsche GT3 RSR America thread

"new safety equipment including a rescue opening in the roof allowing use of the KED system for driver stabilization."

This is interesting. Looked up the Kendrick Extrication Device (KED). You can buy them on Amazon for $100. Got me to thinking about having future club racers built to accommodate the KED. The car I just sold had a diagonal bar from the top right side of the main hoop to the left A pillar, which would probably still allow a driver to be pulled out of the top. Might not be a bad idea to add a thin vinyl decal or paint on the roof with the outline of the cutting area and KED symbol for rescuers. I wonder if there is some standardized "KED OK" graphics we can add. I wonder in Speed Ventures fire/rescue contractor has one of these.

    Anybody know anything about it?

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.
But obviously I just dont get it. -fatbillybob

It would be tight in a little car like a Miata with the diagonal roof brace. If you could add a bend in the diagonal brace and cross-brace it to the right front A pillar to create a larger opening at the left rear, above the driver seat, it would be easier.

A did a brief search and found the demo video from the company that makes it. It looks like it's as much -- if not more -- about immobilizing the patient as it is about extrication. It looks like one use is as a backboard where a back board will not fit. Pretty cool piece.

Very cool additional safety element. At $100 it seems like a no-brainer for the rescue guys at the track to have one in their arsenal.

Was just looking at top cage opening in miata today, even with roof diagonal (assuming proper design) I think it would be quite possible.

I know a guy who can design/produce red cut-line and KED decals for the roof

    Emilio,

are there any more details on the roof hole? Like dimensions or how the plug is retained?
