    Default Isle of Man TT

The Isle of Man TT is on right now. I really enjoy these races. It boggles my mind the kinds of risks these guys take and the skills involved to get around the island in one piece. Absolutely mind blowing. Big, big, attachments involved for sure. I don't know that there is a 4 wheel equivalent to this race. Maybe the Greece WRC rally?

Love the TT. When the Moto GP riders go over to the island to watch the spectacle their reactions are priceless. I remember a clip of Rossi standing by the side of the road when McGuiness flies by, bike wiggling at triple digits on a public road and his jaw just dropped.

    What channel is it on?

    Unreal skills, unimaginable courage.

175 mph over the start finish section and 225 whp!

These guys are aliens from a very different planet . . . and the second place guy seems to be animated by a very strange hyperactive force. Listening to him talk, reminds me a little of Richard Petty back in the earlierdays of NASCAR when "speed" was "in their blood" - both literally and figuratively.

Don't even know who landed in second place but just by that description you must be talking about Guy Martin!

The TT is a bucket list event to take in. My father has been twice and the stuff they do is unreal. They are so on the limit that top riders have been known to pull off if they weren't "flowing" correctly that day. Everything must be inch perfect.

I find it facinating that the riders who are at the front for the TT are not (that I know of) partipating in the World Superbike, MotoGP, or other major series. Where do these guys come from and what do they do between TT's? Obviously there is a considerable amount of talent in the TT. Surely these guys compete elsewhere? I find it puzzling that you never hear of these riders outside of the TT.

There's a film on the TT, I believe it's called Closer To the Edge, which follows some TT riders through a season or two. IIRC, there is a whole series of wheel to wheel sprint races that take place on closed-off street courses, similar to the Isle of Man track, and many of them race in that, but it all builds up to the IOM TT being the pinnacle event of their season.

I imagine that once you do what they do, racing on a race track feels downright pedestrian. Guy Martin is a bit of a nut job, but I do recall seeing him say that he didn't see the fun in racing on a well-groomed race track that only had a handful of corners then you're back 'round to the beginning again...

    Thanks Ryan. That makes sense.

It looks like there is a documentary on the Dunlop family coming in June. Perhaps along the lines of the Senna movie? Joey Dunlop who once ruled the TT was killed in an accident in 2000. His brother Richard and his sons are prominent racers today.

LOL. Are you sure that that wasn't played back at 4x? I'm wired just watching it. I can't imagine what the rush is like for the rider. No wonder they can hardly talk during the interviews.

Insane. I can barely handle nine turns / lap. How many turns are there in a IOM TT lap?

It's definitely one of the last races of its kind, as it's much more dangerous than almost any other singular motorsports event.

Isle of Man TT 2014: Stroud rider Bob Price killed

TT 2014: Second competitor, Karl Harris, killed in race

Love the quote from Guy Martin: "I'm definitely not a Stephen Hawkings".

Some day I will go to the IOM TT. It is on my bucket list now.

These riders take years to study the course and know the changes in conditions year to year. It is not something a good rider can show up to and even be in the same league as Guy Martin or John McGuinness. There are some who like to look at the TT as an adrenaline junkie dream but I really think it is methodical. To use an example we are all familiar with, think back to your first track day and the adrenaline filled heart pounding even before a session begins. Now after years of being on track most of us are actually probably pretty relaxed even when we are about to have an off.

Even with the risks I hope events like this can continue forever.
