Default "The Indianapolis of the West"

Completed in 1922 was a one mile, dirt race track in San Luis Obispo. Exposition Race Track was said to be "The fastest track in the country" at that time and boasted a 1,500 seat grandstand. Unfortunately it was closed in 1925..

Egads, look at all that smoke. Now I know why their faces were filthy after races. They were bathing in oil smoke!

I wonder where it was in SLO?

I love old board track racing. Men were men back then. I recwntly found out about Fulford-Miami Speedway in North Miami. A 1.25 mile WOOD oval with 50* banking. lasted a year before a hurricane blew it down.

For the 1 year/race it held, the track record was 143mph in 1926!!! By comparison, Indy's 1926 lap record was only 111mph.

I would like to know where this was located too. That looks a lot like Madonna Mountain in the back ground.

Well Looks like I was right.

A wiki article on board tracks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Board_track_racing

A number of board tracks in California listed including Beverly Hills (?). The SLO track is not listed though.

From what I've seen on films, the drivers were insane, even by the standards of the day. And attendance was often huge.

it was actually off of South Street where Exposition Drive, Woodbridge Street, and Meadow Park are now.. and the hills in the back, "Cheapskate Hill" is known as South Hills or Radio Tower Hill now..
