Not sudden. I was smitten 4 years ago when the LS7 made its debut. First saw one at an AMCI event I was working for Chevrolet. Back then they were $75K, waiting list and dealers tagging on $10K or so. Now I see several pristine sub 10K mile examples locally on autotrader for about $45K. For what its capable of and represents, a bargain at $85K IMO. Now its just silly for any car enthusiast that can afford one not to pick one up to play with, at least for a year or so then sell it.

The reality is that the era of these kinds of cars will be over in 10 years. GM making 500hp gasoline burning supercars a modestly paid professional can afford in 2020? Probably not. Get them while they're available.

The S2000 is also a great performance bargain. $15K + set of sticky tires and you are going fast on any racetrack. Like William said, hard to ignore the relative fun/$ ratio of a good used C5/C6, S2000 or Miata.

The other side of all this is that I will make race wheels specifically for the C5 and C6 next year. Be nice to have a "development" car. I could swing it tomorrow if I stop buying any other toys but it'll have wait until next year. Meanwhile I dream of 4th gear wheelspin, 7 liters of dry sumped aluminum horsepower, Nav, cold A/C and a warranty. I may even splurge and buy myself a nice gold chain to accessorize.

Emilio, i share your desire. I had an opportunity to sit in a C6 Z06 at our last NASA event at BRP. Since i wasnt racing, i was instructing. Got to sit with a HPDE 2 student. I was surprised. That car does not know what understeer is. It was soooo planted. And i was shocked by how quiet that car is. I could barely hear the exhaust/engine.

I am on this bandwagon too, from the moment the C6 Z06 came out. I was always a European car guy in my younger days, frowning on American cars and owning such cars as E36 M3, Fiat Dino Spyder (google it), Audi B6 S4, Mercedes 450 SLC, BMW 535i, '62 Austin Healey 3000 Mk II, etc. Then I got into tracking cars and went Japanese -- 2 Evos, 350Z, Miata.

But if I could have any car that is within the reach of mortals (forget about Pagani Zonda), it's the C6 Z06. Go U.S.A. GM just emerged from bankruptcy today!

    $45K... for what...

A car that you can't weld a cage to? (gotta weld a box AROUND the aluminum frame)

A slightly lower engine, with a dry sump that doesn't work right?

6 padlet brakes that are expensive, and last as short as 2 hours?

    Little weight loss?

    An engine with questionable reliability?

    only 25% more power?

    I'll take 2 C5Z06's, please.

(with how fast I am going through my miata, I think I'd need a spare corvette)

This thread is good. After doing the spring mountain corvette school, im convinced my next car (after the miata im buying in the next couple months) will be a c5 z06. AMAZING cars to say the least.

Who said anything about a cage? If I want a Corvette race car I'll buy a competitive T1 car and save $10K

dry sump. Again, I'm not racing it

ooh, its lighter than the C5!

Engine reliabilty? I'm not going to race it. Besides, I'd buy one with a current warranty.

Brake pads.. psst, I know a guy who has the hookup on brake pads

    25% more power? Hells yeah!

Carbotech has the Monopads. I hear that is the way to go.

If you are not racing it, there are other options to attach the cage that get around most GCRs in a more than adequate way.

I hear a bigger oil tank is the way to go for better oiling on track.

But all that should be verified as I don't drive one.

Still my goal to get back in the seat of a Z06. I curse the day I bought this house and had to sell my C5 Z06... phtooey! I spit on the mortgage!

It's such a complete package for the price that you can live with it's shortcomings. Who cares if fit and finish isn't perfect, or the pedigree isn't quite Porsche-like? It goes fast, turns fast, stops fast, and is actually cheaper to own than most regular sporty cars, let alone supercars.

And 27-30 mpg highway... (unless you're pushing the limiter on the way to Vegas like I used to...)

I'd rather have a 6GT3 for that price range. U get a functional dry sump, interior and gearbox that corvette guys could only dream of. Not to mention it's a much better investment.

man. I'm on the fence on this one too. I have a TX based customer how I've done set up work for in a C6 Z06 with Penske's, and cam, and headers. ridiculous speed with the AC on. I was putting down FTD, and wondering if he had any good cd's in the changer.

Here is the question for me -

If it is a racecar, you have the issues that Rob raised. But if you are just using it for track days, do you really care if it is the absolutely fastest car at the track? Or would you prefer the best driving experience? tracking a vette with a factory warranty definitely has its benefits.

The cost to run the vette is staggering on track is staggering. fuel, tires, pads. yuck. But why own it if you don't track it?

its a circular argument for me. And they don't make a white one (other than the ron fellows car).

So who knows. My wife thinks Vette drivers have a certain stereo type. lol. Bu you guys don't fit it.
