Axis of Oversteer poses the question: Should there be a safety rating for tracks?

What changed to prevent all that is a huge increase in driver and vehicle safety after Senna's death. People still crash just as badly, but the result is relatively minor comparatively, and no one has been killed since.
though no driver has been killed, 3 safety stewards have died since.....

I think F1's safety has a lot to do with the change in the tracks(not 100% but a lot)... Imagine this GTO crash in an F1 car, hard to think the driver walks away... Now imagine it as F1 speeds...

I'm not sure if it's any one specific thing. Remember the Senna-era F1 cars where the drivers head is just sitting there completely exposed? It's almost ridiculous looking by todays standards. I think head restraints and supports have been a huge factor, as have chassis designs and crash testing, and track safety. Could say the same about NASCAR as well.

I agree a lot of the improvements are from providing safety barriers between the cars and dangerous objects such as trees, poles, ditches, etc. Tracks should have to meet safety standards IMO. I'd be surprised if a law suit doesn't arise from this tragedy and I'm surprised this hasn't happened before at this track. Or has it? The other track that looks scary to me is the new one in WA with all the redwood trees on the sides. If this car hit a concrete barrier they likely would have both walked away. What about gravel traps like Laguna seca?

I agree. minimally, put up a tire barrier along the tree lines.

anyone know what happened to the 2nd medivac ? hard to imagine a beer bottle would do such a damage (not from beer bottle hitting the car, but from swerving). did it also hit a tree ? or did it roll ?

You should see Le Circuit Mont Tremblant in Quebec. It's basically a windy mountain road with painted berms, located in a forest. Looks like a great track though . . . .

We call that Nurbergring. Didn't you spend money last year just to drive on that dangerous road ?

hahaha! Yes, but we were in a turbo swift with proper roll protection and snug harnesses. :P Nurburgring is safer than Summit Point because armco barriers.

I've always been a bit bemused that the Lotus 2-Eleven, from the factory, comes with a 6pt cam-lock belt system for the driver's seat, but only a 4pt ASM push-button belt system for the passenger's seat.

I mean... simplify and add lightness, but...
