Default How did they survive the 80's?

I was poking around Youtube today for old in-car videos from the 80's. There are so many things we take for granted now in regard to track safety. Walls, catch fencing, spectator fencing, tire walls, curbs even.

There are a lot of in car videos from pro series out there, but to me, the neat ones are of the everyman club racer.

John Finger in an RX-7 from 1982 at Roebling Road (do top Spec Miata drivers spend that much time sideways? Plus classic Z sound next to him)

    Riverside 1985 in a GT4 Lotus Cortina

Laguna Seca 1985 in a Corvair (1.9 mile track!)

Sears Point 1985 in a Corvair (before goats chewed all the grass there)

Road America 1977 (not in-car or 80's but it captures the ambience of a club race with things called spectators!)

Heck, I wonder how any of us survived to even get driver's licenses. I mean, you'd think instant death would occur to any kids climbing around and playing Hot Wheels in the back of a Chevy wagon, or standing on Dad's lap helping him steer, etc.

Clearly, lack of vehicle safety killed off the dinosaurs, not sure how we avoided that fate. Perhaps we were all awesome Corvette drivers in an earlier life?

Those old 510s still look great, and it was interesting to see Laguna Seca before Turns 3 and 4 were added to the infield.
