Nissan built a car that weighs 3800 lbs. and drives itself around the Nurburgring faster than any Porsche with their best factory test driver behind the wheel.

    Will wonders never cease.

wasn't the issue about Porsche "accusing" Nissan of cheating. as Porsche's own driver with GTR couldn't come within 20 sec of 7:26, as a couple of magazines, which tested GTR vs. GT2/3, and GT2/3 all went faster around the Ring.

so I don't see this video prove anything, as Germans were accusing Nissan of cheating with slick tires and suspension.

I would imagine that the word "official" in the title would indicate that there was some sort of proof that this gtr is in fact stock before or after the run. By the sound those tires are making in the video I can pretty much guarantee you that they are not r-compounds. R compounds only make noise like that when you are in serious trouble.

the above video only shows the lap

but Nissan knows what people are gonna say, so in this DVD from Best Motoring August Issue, they basically shows everything is stock including tires etc

a lot of magazine tests doesn't rent the whole track for testing, do they, so it's easily to see traffic? and do they max out the variables? like weather, track condition, correct tire pressure, tire temp etc? that's what Nissan does, they MAX OUT the car in best setup and condition!

if someone can drive 1s faster in a 1 min course from avg to best car setup and track condition, that's probably 8s at Nurburgring

also think about this Nissan test driver that drove countless lap in the same car while other test drivers drove the car a few laps, regardless of driving skill we all know that knowing the car and road better will go faster

I'm surprised no magazine has rented the ring out for a half day to do a true side-by-side with various cars, various drivers rotating between the cars, all under the same conditions. I'd think that a huge shootout like that would sell TONS of issues.

at least 1 mag did. it was a damp session, 7:49 GT2 vs. 7:56 GTR

that's good to hear. hopefully the Porsche test driver really need to look for another job

Porsche and magazines did some back to back test, but they just couldn't get GTR to go faster than GT2/3, but they were able to get GT2/3 to come close to its record lap around the Ring (which is slower than GTR's 7:26). They were about 20 sec off pace, that was the reason they think Nissan is cheating.
    but GT2 / Turbo did beat GTR. (7:34, 7:38 vs. 7:54)

what's next. if Porsche Panamera can't beat CTS-V's 7:59, they are going to call Cadillac cheating too !!

Yeah, but I don't want to see a manufacturer test the cars, I want somebody totally independent with cars we know are "stock."

Maybe I missed it, but how is this any different, in terms of legitimacy, from the lap that came out months ago? Or how is it any more 'official'?

I think they have different start and finish lines because the track is so long that in order to get one timed lap with the same start finish line, you need 3 laps (out lap, timed lap, cool down lap = one timed lap, just like at our HPDEs).

Have you seen the way they do the celebrity timed laps with the "moderately priced car" on Top Gear? It's a standing start and they cross a different line at the end.

By the way, (off topic) I saw a rerun of the Ronnie Wood Top Gear show last night -- best episode of all time. Jeremy driving a tiny car inside the BBC, Ferrari 599, Bugatti Veryon v. Royal Air Force Jet, $500,000 Rolls Royce and Rolling Stone Ron Wood driving the moerately priced car and being interviewed.
