Default Grip event at Adam's kart track

I went to the grip event last Tuesday. I, Charles Ng and Emilio (and a few others) had quite a bit of fun there. I know some of you thought it is dumb, but I will share my experience.

    1. it is ran very loosely. no tech inspection. you pay $20 for one hour. which is 3 runs minimum. 6-9pm means a total of 9 runs minimum and for $60. number of cars are capped at 20.

    2. 4 cars on track at once. you get an outlap (1/2 lap), 2 hot laps (I believe only 2nd lap is timed), and an inlap (3/4 lap). each lap is 50 - 60 seconds.

    3. they had a lots of spectators. music blaring. pretty good mobile taco stand.

    4. gate fee is $5.

    5. We saw a few spins, offs, worst I saw was hitting tire barrier at the end of straight. the BMW was fine, scratched up his front bumper. car kept on driving afterward.

    6. track is narrow, I wouldn't drive a big car like GTO or a Mustang. but Miata and S2000 were perfect for the track. They have put in some tires in the middle of straight to slow you down. so it is possible to nick the tires.

    7. I don't think any of Trackhq regulars would have problem at this track, as we are aware of our surroundings. I would be very comfortable driving with Trackhq regulars.

    8. It is basically an autocross course, but with tire wall instead of just cones. If you are the type that often wipe out the whole sections of cones, then you might have some contacts. But if you are like me, 1 to 3 cones max per run, then you wouldn't have any problems. most of the corners have a bit of run off area. since you are not going that fast, you don't need a ton of run off area.

    9. of course, I have a Miata. I wouldn't mind a little tire marks or a brush with tires. if you drive a Porsche, brand new Evo, it is another story. But again, I didn't see any bad offs, even with many many bad drivers there.

    10. my Miata is not streetable. it is difficult for me to shakedown a car after let's say a clutch install. It sucks to drive 400 miles (round trip) to Buttonwillow, only to have to car break on simple thing during the first lap. I will be bringing my Miata there in the future for shakedown.

    11. There are some bad slower drivers. but to be comfortable, you can request to have a group of 4 buddies go out at once. it was more fun, and we get to chase each other.

    12. We talked to the organizer. thinking of renting the place for a night. With trackhq regulars, it would be fun and much safer. summer night, taco, exhaust fumes, guessing about 10 runs (3 minutes per run), sounds fun.

there are 700 threads in the OC thread excuse me if I didn't read it thought it was a discussion about best color for racing suit and helmet .

it is getting popular, 20 cars gets filled fast. if you are 30 minutes late (6:30), no spots.

again, I know some of you thought this was dumb and dangerous. You are right if it is with the wrong crowds. but when a pack of us ran, it was fun, because we knew all the drivers in our group.

Dude, I want in! My schedule is free for next Tuesday~!

Also, if you rent the night for TrackHQ members, I am in also.

Is there timing available? Or do we just use our own GPS timing and set up split times? I would like to know I perform relative to others.

    Should I bring my car?

I have a feeling I will just spin the tires from corner to corner.

To the right of The Sheriff. Isn't everyone?

Charles has tried to get me to go to Adams for drift for a while...I might be interested in that also.

Anyone know where I can get 2 x 225/45/17 tires for cheap??

PS. For drifting, I usually run 255/40/17 up front and 225/45/17 in rear.

yes they have timing, but you can't hear it at the pit. you can ask the starter though. I would bring my own timer next time.

yea I drove the Evo up there just to be a spectator though. Maybe next time i'll take it on the track. It was pretty cool to see Emilio rip it up, especially when he would go into that little burmed hook turn. All you could hear was his splitter scraping on the ground...

but the crowd is kind of sketchy. I mean I wouldnt leave my tools all out like I would at a normal track event. It might grow legs if you know what I mean...

My brother and I have been twice, its nice to get a friend to tag along that doesnt want to run. Thats where all the tools and baggage that you dont want to run with go.
