Default Friend needs a (boring) car

I have a friend (non car enthusiast, no stick shift) that has a 2001 honda civic with 240k miles and a blown headgasket. Dealer repair cost is $1500. Private party value if working seems to be about $2K.

Any suggestions on what kind of car to get next? Looking for good values, reliable stuff. Used is ok if reliable, new is fine too. No electrical power, so William's Fiat is out. No silly shaped cars like scions. My friend was drooling over ford fusions. Commute is about 10 miles, so MPG over 20 or so should be fine. No tiny cars, no huge cars. Freeway comfort and low NVH is important.

What do you guys think? Is the great recession driving used car prices up and new car prices down?

Any great deals out there for the non-enthusiast?

Budget is about $5k in cash and 200 per month.

Aside from their cost I never understood why people race them.

Is this the first time a Miata is not the answer?

05+ Ford Focus. Preferably with the 3.2 motor. Cheap, reliable, economical.

New Fusion and Accord are top rated CR cars. Boring but very good. 2 friends just bought Accord Sport for $22k + tax

New 2014 Volt is $18k after rebates. Good deal and if plugged into 110v. Never have to visit gas station. Cheap to operate

2014 Volts have absolutely enormous deals. even running purely gas the mileage isn't bad; I got 33mpg running the a/c full blast last summer driving from here to St. George with a stop in LA to see family.

I bet a 15,000 mile/year 3 year lease (which would effectively mean no maintenance) could be really good right now.

New Mazda2. It wouldn't be all too boring, and its a FWD miata of sorts so everyone (including THQ) wins
    Do you understand?

My experience with rental cars tells me new domestic cars are surprisingly nice and I would never get a Hyundai Accent.

I know it doesn't fit your criteria, but a friend told me you can lease a fiat 500e for $1000 down $83/mo @ 12k mi/ year. With the fuel savings that's pretty much a free car for 3 years. I'm waiting to see if he gets one, how it goes.

Call Derrin at Wildpony Motorsports. He has a Focus for sale. He just rebuilt the motor. A little rough on the outside (passenger door) but to not bad. Think it's in the 4k range.

This. Maybe owning a Mazda will show your friend driving can be fun.

The friend in question ended up deciding to repair the civic for $800 at a different mechanic and try to save up more money to get something in a couple years.

Thanks for the input guys! Pretty good thread.
