Default Film - The Racing Scene (1969)

Newman, McQueen, Garner. These guys were the real deal.

This documentary film follows Garner’s American International Racers team (founded earlier with Bondurant and Guldstrand) with some additional footage from Garner’s accomplished off road racing. Garner narrates, with his usual affable style. There’s lots of cinematic coverage of some fantastic cars, shot similarly to Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix (1966) (no surprise there). The SCCA F5000 coverage was the best part - great cars on iconic circuits. These cars were a serious equipment - fast and a handful to drive. The camera work makes this film, and the film finds a good rhythm in the second half.

You’ll see cars like the Lola T70 and Surtees TS5 up close. And classic circuits of era: Daytona, testing at Sonoma (then Sears Point), Lime Rock (Results), St Jovit (Results). There’a familiar names like Scooter Patrick, David Hobbs and Sam Posey racing. Must see for Hobbs fans.

I believe Garner was actively working during this time, and what little free time he had must have been poured into the AIR team. He certainly was a capable driver.

It’s a film that any racer will enjoy. The tough battles that don't always go your way will resonate. Garner says it simply “The last thing you ever want to do is let a race get you down.”
